What If Lieberman Pulls It Out This Week? |
|
Well, one thing's for sure, DU will have a full meltdown.
I spoke to my mother yesterday. She's been active in CT dem politics for 40 years. She's a big Lamont supporter, but she thinks the polls aren't necessarily reflective; believes that a lot of Lamont's support is soft, and that people may well have second thoughts about replacing Joe when they walk into the voting booth.
I hope she's wrong, but she's been an insider for a long time, and a savvy one, at that.
Perhaps, tamping down one's expectations is the wise thing to do.

5. Just the fact that LIEberman had to come back to Connecticut to |
|
defend his "record" is satisfaction enough. Not to say I wouldn't be disappointed, I would.
However, I am anticipating a Lamont victory with a huge margin.

6. This is why though optimistic I am |
|
cautiously so. I think a lot of people who are not passionate about how they feel one way or the other may have already gone back and forth a few times. Then we have a bunch of CT papers endorsing Lieberman today. Also, there is no telling how the 20,000 new registered Democrats will vote. I think that all the celebration on DU is very premature. I think that the candidate who wins will be the one with the most motivated voters. And its is too early to tell who that will be, even with the poll results.

What would we do? Back the Republican? Maybe at the very least Joe will get the hint. Doubtful of course but possible.

13. I honestly don't think I could vote for him |
|
after all the shenanigans he and his campaign have pulled. Though I had disagreed with him on many issues I still felt respect for him. I don't now. At this point I am thinking either not voting for anyone for senator or voting for the 3rd party candidate if there is one and its a progressive. I may change my mind but that's how I feel right now.

Sure things aren't too often sure in electoral races. Still, I'm cheered by Lamont's momentum. Regardless of the size of the polling gap, it's Ned who's enjoying the Big Mo right now.
If Lieberman wins, what can I say, it would suck out loud. If Lieberman loses and pursues and independent run, he'll deserve a beating with a stick.

12. Meet the PRess had a graphic that showed that |
|
Lamont is not so much favored as Lieberman is opposed. 30% of supporters of Lamont are voting for Lamont. 65% are voting against Lieberman. The vote is ABL, Anybody But Lieberman. This is normal for a campaign in which the challenger isn't really very well known.

|
not to take progressive Democrats for granted. I wouldn't hold my breath for that, however. It's not his political MO. I'd expect more along the lines of a 'vindication' and 'political capital to spend' sort of reply, much like Bush right after '04.

16. I am usually an optimist |
|
but there is something unnerving about what has transpired in the last couple of weeks. I was reading some posts the other night about the foregone conclusions of a Lamont victory and kept having flash backs to the evening where I sat here and celebrated the indictment of Karl Rove. I still think Lamont will pull this off and it would be huge story but I don't think it is going to be a landslide.

And I do believe Lamont will win, hopefully big. If he doesn't I will be despondant, I will be depressed, I will go hide in a cave for 24 hours, and then I will shrug it off and get back to work.
I believe the polls. I believe my own frequent trips through connecticut where, in my own non scientific sampling, I ONLY saw Lamont bumper stickers.
I am eagerly awaiting the celebration. I declare a late Tuesday "The Blogbarians Ate Jomentum Cyber Pig Roast" on DU. Veggie Pigs for all us veggieterrorists!

19. Electoral politics is a much a crapshoot... |
|
as anything else. And no matter what the polls say, people always have that last minute pang when they enter the voting booth, so they just might end up voting for the known quantity.
So, what if Lieberman pulls it off-- what are CT Dems gonna do? Vote for the Republican? The Green? Stay home? Just a reminder that anything but a vote for Lieberman is a vote for the Republican.
It's not a perfect world, and it won't be the end of this imperfect world if Lieberman spends another 6 years in the Senate-- there's far worse in there.
It might be the end of the world if we get any more kneejerk rightwing Republicans in there, though.

in the Nov. election and I would vote, make no mistake about it. He will have to make a dramatic turn around because it will be a close election and he knows he is not too well liked. Lamont is young and he has a very bright political future.

Iraq, Alito, S.S., Trade not to mention arrogance. If he won't support the primary winner unless it's him, why should I feel compelled to vote for him? I won't vote for a Senate candidate this year.
I will not vote for anyone who has undercut his party in so many ways and who enabled this administration to shred the constitution and our rights.

I wouldn't say that it's impossible nor even that far out, but I think that your mother is more optimistic about Senator Lieberman's chances than Senator Lieberman is. November is the big question, IMO.

26. Lamont and his supporters made Lieberman sweat |
|
This will serve as a warning to any Democratic incumbent to not get too cozy with the Republicans unless you want to face a well funded and supported primary opponent.
At this point we see Hillary Clinton speaking out against the war and calling for Rumsfeld's resignation. Think we'd have seen that without the possible spector of Lieberman getting his head handed to him staring over her shoulder? Rank and file Democrats and independents are mad as hell and politicians who are seen as part of the problem will pay the price.
I'd love to see Lamont win but I've been disappointed in so much politically lately that I am not going to make any predictions. The mere fact that Lieberman had to seek help from (of all people) Bill Clinton is delightful in and of itself.
Winning would be icing on the cake.

Edited on Sun Aug-06-06 03:07 PM by mmonk
but I am hoping very much he is able to win it. I think it will represent a sea change whereby the party can't dismiss half or more of its constituency without debate or engage in actual active dismissiveness.

I'm not in CT so it's frustrating to not have a chance to vote in this because I'm really hoping for a Lamont win. If Lieberman wins however, at least the message is loud and clear in DC that the voters are not happy with the way things are going right now. The post 9/11 free ride is over.

This is the last "elected" administration we will ever see. There will be no 2008 elections....as I've been saying for 2 years here....the shrub ain't leaving...one of the reasons for his play for federal control of the National Guard...which he will get...then if we happen to cry out for the need for a Presidential election in 2008...???????.....he'll have us rounded up and handled......Lieberman or Lamont...what's the difference....we're way past congressional change....
