Lieberman to give speech on Iraq Sunday night alongside Max Cleland

Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and his Democratic challenger, Ned Lamont, spent the final Sunday of their Connecticut primary race reaching out to voters at church, while Mr. Lieberman also prepared to deliver a major speech this evening on the war in Iraq.

The speech, which was added to Mr. Lieberman’s schedule at the last minute, represents a very late attempt by Mr. Lieberman before Tuesday’s election to neutralize or at least limit the threat that his support for the war poses to his re-nomination.

Mr. Lieberman’s advisers said their campaign had been divided on whether the senator should confront his critics head-on and defend his position on the war with new, more pointed language or stick to his game plan of defending himself when the matter arose with reporters or voters.

As late as Saturday night, the advisers said, it was not certain that Mr. Lieberman would deliver the speech. But aides were furiously writing and rewriting it by this afternoon, and Mr. Lieberman was set to deliver it in New Haven alongside a prominent Vietnam veteran and former Democratic senator from Georgia, Max Cleland.

3. I hope democrats in CT see this for what it is ...

Assuming he tries to either repudiate his own past as bush enabler and supporter, or has a "change of heart" and is suddenly critical of bush's killing-for-profit machine, it will all be lies.

If he pulls it out with this eleventh-hour posturing, he will certainly return to his 100% pro-bush stance if he wins reelection. And I hope Connecticut democrats don't fall for it.

5. My SO just gave a great line when I read this...

(we're both CT Dems by the way), "Anyone in CT who knows who Max Cleland even is, is already voting for Lamont."

I laughed. It's true too. It's just another way I think for the Democratic party to tell Joe after his loss, "Look, we did all we can. Now be a good soldier and drop out."

8. This certainly has opened my eyes

The democrats "Old Boys Club" is just as sickening. So many people, who I really
admired have let me know where, we the people stand. Their colleagues are far
more important than their country or the wishes of their constituents. I
sometimes believe I'll be long gone and flowers sprouting from my grave before
the people take back our country. Bless the grass root movement but we're fighting
a giant, including many in our own party. Max, Barbara, Chris, these are people
who I thought we're fighting the good fight, just don't know anymore.
