Smartest city in America?
I never would have believed it when I lived there, but after moving to Dumbfuckistan (Florida) 3 years ago, I might be inclined to believe it. They did, after all, give us Dennis Kucinich.

Smarter than the average city

Cleveland may be one of the nation's poorest cites, but it's also the most intelligent, according to a New York think tank.

The Intelligent Community Forum, which bases its rankings on broadband Internet deployment, has announced its annual list of finalists for its Intelligent Community of the Year award. Cleveland is the only U.S. city on the list of seven, which will be narrowed to a winner during a conference June 9. Also in the running:

Gangnam District, Seoul, South Korea
Ichikawa, Japan
Manchester, United Kingdom
Taipei, Taiwan
Tianjin, China
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

4. "which bases its rankings on broadband Internet deployment"
So...Cleveland scores well because it has the most broadband Internet access?
:wtf:

10. Shocked me too!
I don't really agree with the methodology, but that was staring me in the face when I checked out the Plain Dealer's web page.

20. Like ranking cities' fitness based on number of fast-food outlets.
That was last week's bogus ranking.

The advertising industry has adopted what they see as the campaign program of the future: The Rovian Methodology. Lie and act as though there is evidence to support your position.

Is rolling out broadband the new measure of intelligence?

Nothing against Cleveland, hey, it might even be the smartest by other measures too, and as you point out it is Kucinichville which has to count for something. I do have to wonder what the correlation of broadband adoption is with other measurements.

It's gotten to the point where people will say just about ANYTHING in this country, and there aren't any consequences for them.

Not so long ago, you'd lose all credibility for saying stupid things like that- and no one would hire you.

Book learnin' isn't everything, though.

17. Actually it was best-educated
According to the Census Bureau, at least. Ranked by % of population with college degrees.

http://www.census.gov/acs/www/Products/Ranking/2003/R02T160.htm

Top 3 (by quite a margin) were Seattle, Raleigh NC, and San Francisco.

(and no, I'm not from Seattle)

18. I see - thanks. No wonder my two favorite US cities are SF and Seattle.
I place Seattle second if only because surviving the rainy/overcast days to enjoy those drop-dead gorgeous sunshine-over-the-sound days is not my forte. The Bay Area is perfect for me.

Seattle ranks first in library usage in cities of 500K-750K. Tacoma is first in the 250K-500K population category.

15. Gee. So you and your neighbors get broadband.
You use it to surf for porn, download MPEGs, and skype/messenge all your buddies ... and you're immediately more intelligent.

Ah, to be a teenager with a soaring IQ.
