Maintaining Sanity -- No TV
I just want to share one of my methods of maintaining sanity -- NO TV!

I'm a newsman. I spend 18 hours a day surfing the nets and posting stories to WorldNewsTrust.org (Still in prototype -- keep an eye on us). One thing I DON'T do is watch TV. I consider it to be poison.

I highly recommend this to my fellow DUers. It's just a bunch of crap. I'm a veteran wire service editor with a degree in broadcast journalism. I oughta' know. : )

1. I'm with ya. I almost never watch the garbage.
NPR on the car radio is where I draw the line, and even it leaves an awful lot to be desired.

11. I Know What You Mean
My wife watches the PBS TV newscast (non-cable) occasionally. Similar nonsense... just a different flavor. Still, I'd rather watch that than Faux, except for entertainment purposes. : )

2. We pulled the plug about two years ago.
Not saying there aren't some good shows now and then
but even when I wanted my kids to see something worth
while I could not believe the cr*p that was shown
in the breaks etc.

3. TV free for twelve years!
Smartest thing we ever did for ourselves was to trash the tube.

And still I'm better informed than most everyone I know who does watch it.

Want to beat the corrupt corporate kleptocracy? Kill your television.

7. TV free for four years!
Technically, it's probably more like 5-6 years, but there was a span post 9/11 where we had a 13-incher on all the time. We finally lost that in a burglary, and decided not to replace it.

Our friends and family are still wondering what we do without it. When we say "we talk to each other," people, especially children, start looking a little confused.

I wish we had an Anti-TV Group on DU, or a Television-Free Group.

6. TV = Corporate Mind Control
Let's face it. Ever since GE ran those shows at the "dawn of television" we all have become brainwashed by newsreels, newscasts, Disney, sitcoms, reality tv, you name it.

Pundit talk shows and "news" are only the latest incarnation in a long line of "entertainment" that is ostensibly informative but in reality is plotting the parameters of our mental map of the world.

Our concepts, especially about our world and the people in it are ... tele-formed.

Very reminiscent of the final scene in 1984.

Which way to The Ministry of Truth?

Other than that I take it or leave it. (Though I've strangely become addicted to that america's got talent show.)

10. I only watch TV for entertainment purpose
I have not watch any news cast since November 2004. Yes it took me that long to see the poison in the airwaves.

I watch few hours a week now and only if I see it as totally benign humor. I have found that I am watching less and less each new season. Of the previews for the fall barrage of crap, I see maybe one hour worth watching.

12. We get Netflix...
...and watch 3 movies a week. We'll watch the Simpsons once in a while. Occasionally when there's a big story happening, I'll turn on the network news to see how it's being spun. Other than that, no TV. No radio, either. Much saner this way...

14. I love TV
I watch it for entertainment but don't bother with it for news, especially for local news which is nothing but 'news' about Hollywood and crap like 'summer of the shark' etc. As much as I love TV though if I HAD to choose between having TV or the internet I would take the internet over TV in a split second.

15. We've slowly pared away to watching only a few shows
and don't rely on the teevee for news. I like the documentaries on LINK. Never CrapNotNews. And suddenly, the shouted invective stopped.

Works for us.
