My husband just got off the phone with Russ Fiengold's |
|
offie and the man said that Fiengold has not stated that he will not filibuster. The man said that his statements were misconstrued on some blog. He has not released how or what he is going to do at this point. There was a post that stated otherwise here on DU and it is was not correct.

5. Not necessarily a freep...the story was partially true. |
|
My understanding is that Feingold said that they didn't seem to have the votes for a filibuster. His comment was misinterpreted and kneejerk reactions did the rest.

That's good to hear...gives me some hope that the Senate Dems are "keeping their powder dry" for a full-scale assault.

conversation which was a few hours ago. I too was responding on the information that was posted.
When I called, I didn't specifically ask about filibuster, but i did say to the staffer that I assumed feingold was on the same page with the rest of the progressive community, so we haven't even been bothering to call him on this vote, because we expect a NO on Alito vote from him. But that word on the internet said that he would not vote in favor of a filibuster.
The Staffer said, he hadn't yet decided which way he would vote regarding Alito's confirmation. I reported a brief summary in that thread, with a bit of annoyance regarding the fact that we now have to include Feingold on the list of who to call, to urge to defeat Alito's confirmation.

that he is undecided on that is rather disconcerting. Well, looks like I'll have to call him again. It does get rather taxing. I've made at least a hundred or so calls in the last year, even though half the time I feel like just giving up. Ah well, this is too important.

I call, email, and fax my senators now on a daily basis and have begged everyone I know to do the same. I even do it for my mom since she doesn't know how to email or fax. but other than that, i want to reserve judgement when it comes to what the dems do. i don't want to get all excited and then find out they don't filibuster, and on the other hand, i don't want to start dumping on them because what if they do. i just keep contacting my senators and as far as passing judgement, all i can do is wait and see.

and that is why hubby called. It was not a wasted call. It may have helped the senator make the right move on this issue with another call. I hope others are doing the same and keep the pressure on. Peace

15. I think Reid's got another "Rope-A-Dope" going here. |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 05:03 PM by longship
We're getting a lot of conflicting info on the filibuster. I haven't heard a single Dem Senator rule it out. All their language is soft and non-committal. Like Feinstein saying she does not think that Alito rises to the level where the filibuster is appropriate. This is far from a categorical denial. There's lots of wiggle room in all their statements.
This is why I think the Dems may be going the filibuster route. They're going to dare the Repugs to pull the trigger. I think that there's been a collective outcry to kill Alito's appointment and the Senate Dems may do that very thing. They're not saying so because it would give the Repugs a huge jump in the inevitable public opinion war which would ensue.
Reid and Company have their poker hands close to the chest. We're not going to know what's going to happen until it comes time for debate on the floor. We'll know when the Repugs try to close off debate for the vote, and probably not before. The idea is to catch the Repugs off guard.
If the Repugs sense that something is up, look for Crashcart to be in the Senate well.
We have a few Repubs committed to opposing the nuclear option: Chaffee, Snowe, Collins, and a couple of others. I'll bet Specter opposes it, too.
Whatever happens, it's going to be interesting.
This is speculative, but I'm hearing some things that make me think that something is up. If it isn't the filibuster, I don't know what it could be.
