The Political Landscape Just Shifted |
|
It may be too early to say this, and I may rue saying it, but I believe Lamont's win really does signify a shift in the political landscape. I don't have the vaguest how big this shift if, but I'll go out on a limb and suggest that it's pretty damned significant, and does indeed have national implications.
What does it say?
It says, chiefly, that people are profoundly dissatisfied with the status quo, and that bodes well for November!

If Lamont wins all of them will see the writing on the wall.

Middle America (I live here) is pissed off at this president and this war. See +50% of the people.
Ned Lamont is the mainstream, not just of the Dem party, but of America.
What part of free Iraqi's burning American flags in Baghdad makes us safer? Their people have spoken. And they hate us. There is only one sane course of action. Ned Lamont knows it. The American people know it.

He's against the Iraq war but is hardly "far left."

BS went from thinking of "considering giving up on the party" to "going to switch parties in November" in the space of 5 minutes. And somewhere in between managed a huffy show of umbrage over the phrase "dink town" (as in Podunk) as a Chinese slur. He's a visitor from another world, just passing through.

Within the Democratic Party, especially. With this win, Dean wins a battle(not the war) and the beltway boneheads will lose a great amount of currency.
Even if Lamont loses, that holds. File under "tectonic shifts".

No one will know the future. The course of history has abruptly changed many times due to "unforeseen" events. We can only offer guesstimates.
I'm sure some corporatists want another Reichstag fire to accomplish what they want.

the punditocracy, and the Beltway insiders may come to regret nationalizing this election. Perceptions that it's a tectonic shift will be due in no small part to their Cassandra wailing.

14. Cali, I agree with you. |
|
There is something very symbolic about this particular race, and everyone seems to have understood that. It's about the old ways, cronyism, corruption, war mongering = Lieberman.
Then there's a new approach, gutsy, principled, doing the right thing = Lamont.
This is the reason why this race has been so publicized. Earlier in the week, there was a thread entitled, "Lamont win = the beginning of the end to the war in Iraq". When I saw that headline, I was just stunned. Had to sit back for a while and just think about it.
THAT's why they've been protecting Lieberman. It's all about the war.
