Paging Chuck Schumer...
Get your butt on a plane to Hartford right now.
Go to Joe's HQ and take "Joementum" out to the woodshed and make him aware there will be consequences should he run in the "Lieberman Party."
Then go to Lamont HQ and make sure people know the party leadership will support OUR nominee.

4. He can't support him now. He'd be turfed out of his job at the DSCCC.
You can't give aid and comfort to a candidate running AGAINST the Democratic nominee in that job.

10. We'll see
His archrival - Eliot Spitzer, the next Governor of NY - will support Lamont, though.

7. He's Refused To Rule Out Supporting Lieberman
He pointedly refused to say that he and the DSCC would not support Lieberman as an Independant.

Incredible. It's not our Democratic Party anymore - it's his.

11. Heh. I'm not there just yet...
But this is his defining moment. If he supports Lieberman against the Democratic nominee he should lose his position at the DSCC. Put Boxer or Feingold in that spot.

Hillary and the rest have to decide now as well. Better that they force Joe out now, than we split the party in November, and beyond...

5. Heard a story that if Joe goes Indy he loses all committee assignments
after all, he would no longer be a Dem.

8. HA! So if he gets elected as an Indy, he will have no power or seniority.

12. He'd run in his own party, then switch back to (D) after the election...
If he ran and won, it would be up to the Democratic caucus in the Senate to determine his committee assignments next January.

He could remain Unenrolled and caucus with the Democrats, but that seems unlikely.

13. I think that depends...
It would be up to the Senate Democrats to decide how to handle it. If he were to agree to caucus with the Dems, as he probably would, then they'd probably agree to treat him as a Dem for purposes of committee assignments.

That's how the House handles Bernie Sanders, who was elected as an independent. From his website:

"Although not a member of any political party, when it is necessary to associate with a caucus for the purposes of committee assignments, Congressman Sanders caucuses with the Democrats. As far as seniority is concerned, the Congressman is considered more senior than every member elected after his freshman Congress, the 101st (1990). Congressman Sanders is currently the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit." http://bernie.house.gov/biography/committees.asp

Of course, the best solution is to prevent the problem from arising in the first place. I was up in Connecticut today leafletting, and I haven't thrown away the train schedule. Bring it on, Joe!
