Actually, I've been here a couple years longer than that. This is my second username.

Again, they do this all the time - I'm surprised that you've never seen them. They're done for Supreme Court nominations, primaries, hearings, etc. Pretty much any *big* story that generates a lot of traffic. They're done to try to cut down on the number of other threads, with varying success. DU has been doing "official" threads as long as I've been here.
