Can the Democratic leadership now please censure Joe Lieberman
Edited on Tue Aug-08-06 11:02 PM by DLnyc
for not supporting the winner of the primary? In fact, for not only not supporting, but mounting a campaign AGAINST the winner of the primary?

In the last 40 years, I have fought for many a candidate in local and national primary campaigns. Many times the candidate I, and a great many others, supported did not in fact win the primary. And OVER AND OVER we have been told by the Democratic leadership that we need to "pull together now and support the winner of the primary". I have accepted this logic and often supported candidates who were far from my first choice, in the interest of unity. Surely the same logic applies in Connecticut: two candidates campaigned, debates were held, endorsements sought, ads aired and, finally, an election held. The people of Connecticut made their choice and now, presumably, Democrats will pull together and support the winner of the primary.

Of course, in case there arises from the power circles at the top of the Democratic party, not a great hue and cry demanding that Joe either cease and desist or be permanently ejected from the party, but, rather, a deep, inexpicable and inpenatrable silence, then a disturbing thought crosses my naive brain. That is, perhaps some of these gentlemen are not the LEAST bit interested in "unity", but instead are mostly interested in mutually propping up each other's hold on power. More specifically, it begins to look like certain national figures are more interested in an ongoing quid-pro-quo between each other and between themselves and various deep-pocketed lobbyists than in any sentimental silliness like "democracy" or even that silly idea of a "Democratic Party".

I'm sure I'm just being cynical and we will very quickly see national Democratic leaders clearly declaring Joe henceforth unwelcome at their tables. But, in case not, perhaps we should all look toward recruiting strong alternatives for upcoming primaries.

2. I don't know of any other cases of a primary loser
...staying in the same race.

3. He made a choice to leave the party.
He wants to be independent. Independent means doing it ALONE.

Buh-bye, Joe.
