There's no "rule" per se. But a LBN story may get more attention in GD, so cross-posting is good for that sort of thing. I have more of a pet peeve with multiple postings on the same story. It's hard enough to find what you want without having to dig through multiple threads on the same topic. That's why a good DUer checks to make sure it hasn't been posted before.

5. Cross-posting is sometimes acceptable as you've described.

From the DU rules:

"Cross posting of duplicates in the two General Discussion forums is not permitted. Cross-posting of duplicates in other forums is occasionally permitted if there is a clear reason for doing so.

Do not spam the message board by posting the same message repeatedly, or by posting a flood of different messages."
