Let's build on Lamont's victory to mobilize the peace vote this fall

The stunning victory of insurgent candidate Ned Lamont over staunchly pro-war Sen. Joe Lieberman in yesterday’s Connecticut primary demonstrates the intense voter dissatisfaction with the war in Iraq – and the power of the pro-peace vote in this year’s mid-term elections. And Peace Action intends to capitalize on that power this fall with our nationwide “Peace Voter 2006” campaign.

Please help us build the peace vote in other states by supporting our Peace Voter 2006 campaign today!

Peace Voter 2006 is a non-partisan, grassroots campaign designed to let voters know where candidates stand on a number of key foreign and domestic policy issues, including the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, the resumption of U.S. nuclear weapons testing, military intervention in Iran, federal budget priorities and the military recruitment of young Americans.

The primary vehicle for Peace Voter 2006 will be the Peace Voter Guide, which will be distributed to 2.5 – 3 million voters nationwide. An example of the Peace Voter Guide, along with other supporting materials, can be found at www.PeaceVoter.org.

Democrats and Republicans need to realize the American public is not looking for politicians who posture about being “strong” or “tough” on foreign affairs. They are looking for candidates who have clear ideas about solving our nation’s problems, and the #1 problem that needs to be addressed is our government’s disastrous military occupation of Iraq, which is now the defining issue of our time.

Peace Action and its network of affiliates and chapters across the country will be organizing Peace Voter campaigns in 40-50 House and Senate races this fall, including a number of competitive races in states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Jersey, California, Maryland, Ohio, Connecticut and New York. (A list of specific races will be posted in early September.)

I urge you to help us follow up on the momentum of Ned Lamont's victory, and spread the pro-peace voter message to as many states as possible, by giving generous support to our Peace Voter 2006 campaign today.

Ned Lamont's victory is a historic moment, and this could well be an equally historic election. With your help, we can make that happen. Thanks again for everthing you are doing to give voice to the pro-peace majority in our country.

Kevin M Martin
Executive Director
Peace Action

P.S.- In addition to supporting our Peace Voter 2006 campaign, we also urge you to sign the Peace Voter pledge, if you have not done so already.
