Will the invasion of Iran mean electoral defeat in November?
...or will the majority of Americans be so fed up that another war will fail to wag the dog.

2. There will be no invasion of Iran.
You have to have an army on the ground there to do that.

11. We have one next door. Doesn't matter that they'd probably
get jumped from behind by Iraqis while heading into Iran. We have a stupid bunch of messianic nutcases who are hell bent on ending the world in power. Once they are raptured, the oil companies will take over and show who is really the boss.

18. That looks about right. Alexander the Great made it as far
as India before he got his butt handed to him. A little further and neocon dreams of empire will go into sudden death.

3. I think any invasion of Iran, or bombing thereof ......
would umm .... kinda put any electoral results on the back-burner for awhile .. but that's just my humble opinion. Peace. :)

4. It will be WWIII (as Glenn Beck wants)
and we will all be eating shit and shoveling mud. A direct assault on Iran will change the face of the planet.

5. If a war with Iran erupts, there will be martial law
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 05:22 PM by Selatius
When people see prices jump within a day to $5.00/gallon at the gas station for regular unleaded fuel in the countryside and $6.00 to $8.00 in the cities, there will be economic disruption. We're talking about the kind of economic disruption that could disrupt the movement of food and water to people, and somebody here said that we're three square meals away from chaos. When people panic about food, it's not a good thing at all.

10. Don't worry. I'll remember it.
I do *not* believe there's going to be a war with Iran. I could be wrong. But whatever fantasies the Neo-Cons may have in that regard, at least the way things stand right now, the reality is the country won't stand for it and the military can't manage it without a draft.

And there aint gonna be a draft, either.

12. They are so desperate that they will take 42 year olds!
Even my fat ass could get back in, after all these years! I could just see myself back at Ft. Knox doing basic training again - 'Look Drill Sgt, I need that cellphone to text my peeps at DU. LONG LIVE THE REVOLUTION!' I've already PTd till I puked, so what.

13. Oh, they'll take us.
But they aren't going to draft us.

They aren't going to do anything that might actually threaten to wake the US populace out of their High Fructose Corn Syrup, Jessica Simpson, US Magazine induced trances.

14. I think this is a time when Freepers should stand up and enlist
17-42 is a wide berth. Show their sincerity in supporting George Bush. Yeah I agree, no way in hell will ANYONE seriously get behind a draft. Unless some idiot starts WWIII without us.

17. I thought they all had already.
Silly me, I thought everyone still shilling from this war on the innernets was typing little missives from a laptop in their Humvee outside of Baghdad.

8. If we're in as shooting war with Iran, there aren't going to be elections
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 05:28 PM by leveymg
It will quickly escalate into a full-fledged regional conflageration with lots of blowback and threats back and forth with other powers.

Can you imagine having an election at the height of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, or worse? That was also an off-year election, by the way. By election day, the confrontation was over. There was no dramatic shift in the results.

However, an averted near-war might tend to favor the incumbents, if '62 is a guide.

http://www.ashbrook.org/publicat/oped/busch/06/1962.html

When the United States resumed U-2 surveillance over Cuba in October 1962, it became clear that the Soviets were indeed placing nuclear missiles on Cuba, and the missile crisis was on. Kennedy cut his tour short after 5,500 miles, and the campaign was frozen. When the crisis was resolved a few days before balloting, Kennedy was the winner. On Election Day, Democrats won what was widely perceived as a moral victory by fighting Republicans to a draw, losing a mere four seats in the House and actually gaining four seats in the Senate. Democrats also suffered no net loss in governorships, the only time the President’s party could say that from the 1920s to 1986. Some of Kennedy’s fiercest critics, like Senators Walter Judd of Minnesota and Homer Capehart of Indiana, went down to defeat, and so did Richard Nixon in his bid to become Governor of California.

15. We won't invade, we will bomb from the air like Israel with Lebanon
We will flatten their airforce in hours, and we will take apart their radar defense grid in days, and they will watch us use satellite guided bombs, laser-guided bombs, and cruise missiles on them and their nuclear facilities. If we're insane enough, we will deploy nuclear bunker busters against some of their deeply burried bunkers and ignore the nuclear fallout on neighboring countries.

Then Iran will retaliate by ordering their agents in the Middle East to attack US assets in the area, and they will likely order agents to launch terrorist strikes on US soil if there are Iranian agents on US soil. (Think Beslan Massacre in Russia as an example of what a strike could look like) They will also likely try to plug the Hormuz Strait by deploying anti-ship missiles there in a bid to attack US ships.

20. Yes, China and Russia will oppose us
If the Russians were bold enough, they'd ship them surface-to-air missiles like we shipped Stingers to the Afghani Mujahadeen in the 1980s.

China? They'd begin dumping some of their US dollar reserves and crippling the US economy in the process, as if the shock of $5.00/gallon after war breaks out was not enough for the US economy.
