Joe Fires His Staff
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 06:35 PM by kpete
Lieberman Braces for Defections

The Carpetbagger Report says the Lieberman campaign staff "shake-up" we forecast last week is actually their way of spinning several resignations about to take place.

"Two independent sources have confirmed that some Lieberman aides decided well in advance of yesterday's primary that if the senator abandoned the Democratic Party for an independent campaign, they would resign in protest. Given yesterday's results and Lieberman's announcement, that's exactly what's about to happen."

Update: The AP says Lieberman "fired his campaign manager and spokesman, and asked for the resignations of his campaign staff."

Update II: Longtime Lieberman aide Sherry Brown and his former senate press secretary Dan Gerstein have joined the campaign. In addition, The Hotline notes all remaining staff and consultants have resigned.

54. That's what happens when you hitch your wagon to an anvil, Joe.
Sorry it happened to you, but I'm even sorrier to see what brought this on. It was YOU repeatedly and relentlessly ignoring your constituents because you thought you knew better than they did, and you pasted yourself to bush - GOD knows why. You made your bed. Now you have to lie down and die in it.

43. Firing his staff
Or asking for resignations, if this is true, is the first (and only) decent thing he's done. It allows people who still might feel loyalty to him personally the ability to get the hell away from his independent run without risking their future careers. Who wants to hire someone to run a Democratic campaign that isn't really loyal to the party?

83. On using thyme.
For culinary purposes, thyme may be used as a seasoning, by adding fresh sprigs to soups, stews, and casseroles. It is a key ingredient in most stuffing recipes and is also excellent for adding to meat marinades (especially chicken). For flavor, fresh thyme trumps the ground seasoning every time!

As an herbal remedy it is highly effective antiseptic used for coughs, colds, gastric problems, wind (gas), colic, bad breath but is most famous, historically speaking, in overcoming uterine problems (it used to be called "mother thyme").

To take advantage of these properties, the oily resins within the plant must be released. This is achieved by adding the leaves (needles) and flowering tops to boiling water and then steeping. The resulting tea has a slightly camphoraceous aroma (great for opening sinus passages)and mildly bitter taste. The addition of honey, extremely healing in its own right, should counteract the bitterness.

The efficacy of thyme tisanes is increased by the addition of other herbs such as peppermint (for colds), ginseng, yarrow, elderflower, even a dash of cayenne (for digestive problems).

I hope this mini-tutorial on thyme is of some use to you.

Best regards,
Snaggletooth the Crone

77. I see it as a necessity too
The staff is no doubt Democratic activists who have worked within the party their whole life.

Most would quit and it would make bad news for him over and over again. He really had to fire them and then he can hire back anyone who wants to stay with him, which won't be many of them.

This will be a good opportunity to see how many of his relatives were paid staffers though.

Interesting article here:

http://politicalwire.com/archives/2006/07/21/in_connecticut_bombshell_hits_schlesinger_campaign.html

July 21, 2006

In Connecticut, Bombshell Hits Schlesinger Campaign

The Hartford Courant sent a bunker bomb in to Connecticut Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Alan Schlesinger’s flagging campaign today with revelations that the former legislator was successfully sued for thousands of dollars in casino debts he ran up in Atlantic City venues. Schlesinger’s campaign was rocked last week by the news that, among other things, he had gambled in a Connecticut Indian casino under an assumed name, Alan Gold. His luck will have run out now.

Word of his gambling debts will renew calls for Schlesinger to abandon his tattered candidacy. His falling fortunes caused much speculation Thursday on a successor candidate in the wake of a Quinnipiac poll showing Democrat challenger Ned Lamont leading incumbent Joseph Lieberman for the first time in the August 8th primary. Fainthearted Republicans who had declined to run in the spring, when they thought Lamont a minor protest candidate, are witnessing the rare second chance in the simultaneous declines of Lieberman and Schlesinger.

63. isn't it more likely he'll be splitting the repuke vote?
knowing Limpballs, Boortz, et al's fondness for the likes of Zell Miller and Lieberman, it is not inconceivable that many repukes will throw their vote away with the twisted notion that they will "make a statement" or "punish the dems" by voting for Lieberman. And more than a few might actually LIKE his platform--it is after all totally repuke-lite.

67. Welcome to DU
To the factions that have funded him over the years -- who desire a bought-off-corporatist and/or hawkish agenda -- it only matters that Lamont not win.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that he doesn't CARE whether he wins -- he's obviously comfortable with his privileged position as a Senator -- but I agree that it is possible that Lieberman is pursuing this candidacy with a second, more important goal in mind. I.e., ensuring that someone who will not upset the balance of power in the Senate on the issues that matter to corporatists and hawks.

69. I got a rather nasty visual from misinterpreting the title of this post.
Trust me, that's not the kind of "Joementum" I wanted to be thinking about tonight.

74. Lieberman Party of 1
I am so happy that everyone is pulling away from him in revulsion.
Yesterday Al Frankin had callers give joe a new campaign slogan.
Lieberman Party of 1 was leading, last I heard.

What kind of holier than thou person thinks he has any more to offer to this country? He has turned on the good Democrats and went over to the mostly hated dark side.
:silly:

80. Corporate owned Joe blames the little people

“Lieberman stated on the Today Show that he was committed "to bringing the Democratic Party back from the extreme, back from Ned Lamont and Maxine Waters."

Same old, same old. Corporate owned Joe has reached into the Republican bag of dirty tricks to throw racism in our faces again. Why not, it’s worked thousands of times before? But maybe a few of the millions who vote strictly according to their racial preference will this time reflect on their own economic self-interest for a change and ignore the bait.

Naw, economics is way too complicated for them.
