Joe Lieberman: Foe of Third-Party Politics

A number of bloggers have pointed to the bitter irony that a man who was denied the vice presidency by a third-party spoiler candidate in Ralph Nader is now eagerly pursuing a third-party bid of his own.

I’ve been scouring Nexis for a money hypocrisy quote. None of these is likely to end up on a Lamont campaign button, but they certainly suggest a distaste for men who monkey with the two-party system:

-“I ask those who are thinking about voting for Ralph Nader to decide how they feel — how George Bush feels — about protecting the environment, protecting consumers, protecting a woman’s right to choose, because all of those may well be in jeopardy if George Bush is elected president.” — Joe Lieberman, October 2000

-“For Republicans to be putting Ralph Nader on television in a paid ad, certainly might lead your average observer to be cynical.” –Joe Lieberman rejecting GOP support for spoiler candidates, October 2000

-“A vote for Nader is a vote for Bush,” — Joe Lieberman, September 2000
-- Tim Dickinson

2. Lieberman's full of shit.
I voted for Nader in 2000 (in hindsight I'd have voted for Gore, but the Gore/Lieberman ticket was simply not progressive enough for my taste). I didn't vote for Nader because I wanted Gore/Lieberman to lose (though I guess I did want them to lose -- I also wanted Bush/Cheney to lose. I wanted Nader/LaDuke to win), but rather because I agreed with Nader's stances. I still agree with Nader's stances a lot, but I joined the Democratic party because it seems that you need major-party politics if you want to accomplish anything. I can still respect those who vote for Nader. I'd rather they voted Democratic, of course, but I'll never say that voting third-party is tacit support for an opponent.

There's only one person that is truly responsible for Joe Lieberman's loss last night, and that's Joe Lieberman.

11. I didn't want rain (though I guess I did want rain). Your logic.
It's insanity to split the vote when faced with a rightwing cabel.

Gore not progressive enough. Eating those words yet?
