Good news about Barbaro
From USA Today:

Barbaro update: Both legs looking good
After changing the cast on Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's right hind leg, Dr. Dean Richardson had this to report today: "The leg looked good ... The radiographs also were encouraging. There is no sign of active infection." As for Barbaro's left hoof, which had been hit with a life-threatening case of laminitis, Richardson said "it is dry and healthy looking with excellent early regrowth."

So the news continues to be good for Barbaro, who was said to be in imminent danger just a few weeks ago.

2. This is almost unbelievable news
I have been around way too much of this and had basically given up hope.

They must have spent a ton of money.
I certainly would have - that is a once-in-many-lifetimes pony.

Buena suerte, Barbaro.

4. Yes, the news is good, but he is still in
serious condition and has lost a lot of weight--which is to be expected, since he is not actively using that great mass of muscles that were in peak condition at the time of his injury.
New Bolton Center publishes regular updates on its webpage, which you can access through www.timwoolleyracing.com which gives updates a couple of times a day as they find out new bits from just about anyone who has contact with Barbaro.

The people at timwoolleyracing just started a chat line, though I haven't checked to see whether there are substantive comments in addition to the poems and prayers and inspirational messages that continue to pour in for Barbaro and his caretakers.

Here's hoping!

6. He's got a long road to go but so far...
so good. Day by day miracle journey, as far as I'm concerned. I posted the following article down in the sports forum but perhaps it may be of interest to folks up here following Barbaro's news. Here it is:

Vet: Barbaro’s smarts aiding his recovery
TERRY CONWAY, Special to the Local News
08/01/2006

A century ago, a bay horse named Beautiful Jim Key was one of America’s most celebrated performers, famous neither for his beauty nor his speed, but instead for his exceptional intelligence.

Performing at state fairs and in nationwide expositions, the horse could "read, write, spell, do math, tell time, sort mail, distinguish between coins, make change and identify playing cards."

Trained by Dr. William Key, a self-taught veterinarian, former slave and Civil War veteran, the gifted horse also sparked a dramatic shift in the public’s mind in regard to kindness bestowed on animals.

But mostly, Beautiful Jim Key astonished crowds everywhere with his "smarts."
