From BBC site:
Plot to blow up planes' foiled
A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted, Scotland Yard says.

It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on aircraft in hand luggage, with flights from the UK to the US being targeted.

During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.

Security at all airports in the UK has been tightened and delays are expected.

The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.

Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.

Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

"We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the government, will need to be in place for a limited period only," the statement said.

12. This is BullSh*T! Don't we already screen all hand luggage...
...and carry on bags?

Well, maybe it will stop people from stuffing the overhead bins with their little wheeled suitcases, I hate that.

Look at this:

...Transparent bags

Passengers will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK, the department said. Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

"We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the government, will need to be in place for a limited period only," the statement said. BBC journalist Joe Lynam encountered the increased security measures at Gatwick airport.

"I was handed a piece of paper saying that pretty much nothing could be taken on board the plane," he said.

"Everything had to be checked in and that includes mobile phones, ipods, wallets - even spectacle cases had to be checked in."

Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 12:27 AM by cal04
Police say they believe they have disrupted a major plot to smuggle explosive devices in airline hand luggage to blow up planes in mid-flight.

Sky News has been told the plan was to blow up around a dozen planes over UK and US cities.

Police are said to have arrested 20 people in London.

The Met said the arrests were the culmination of a major covert counter-terrorist operation lasting several months.

But of course I am suuuuuuure it's just coincidence that there would be another narrowly-averted potential terrorist attack right after Lieberman was defeated and Tony Snow said it would result in another 9/11-type attack. Snow just happens to be psychic. :eyes:

the Brits initiate the terror scare and pass it on to DHS.

(That was probably the easiest way to re-initiate the terror 'lerts since they went out of fashion after the '04 election).

Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 03:25 AM by muriel_volestrangler
exceptions only for vital medication and baby milk (which has to be tested in front of security). This includes hair gel, hand lotions and so on.

Heathrow is closed to any flights not already in the air - it's full. Flights leaving from it may be delayed for hours, or may not leave today.

On edit: from http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/europe/08/10/uk.terror/index.html

Across the Atlantic, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security raised its alert threat to the highest level of "severe," or red, for commercial flights originating in the United Kingdom and bound for America.

Meanwhile, the threat level has been raised to "high," or orange for all commercial flights operating in or coming to the United States, a DHS statement said.

"Due to the nature of the threat revealed by this investigation, we are prohibiting any liquids, including beverages, hair gels, and lotions from being carried on the airplane," the statement said.

30. So let me get this...
This plot involved blowing up planes by placing explosives aboard in some carry-on luggage? Well gee, THERE'S an original idea -- no one would ever think to search the luggage! DUH... must've gotten that brilliant idea from that new bestseller, "Terrorism For Dummies". I'm sorry, but this sounds so damned stupid I'm having a hard time believing this.

34. The classics are always the best., don't you agree.
Al Queda likes to keep it simple. The shoe bomber thing didn't work so it's back to the tried & true--with a new twist of course--in that they're planning to use liquid explosive. They study the security procedures and come up with simple ways to exploit our vulnerability. We are so busy looking for the high tech attack and on spending the absolute minimum on security, that we totally miss the guy with the boxcutter and 3,000 people die.

I don't know whether this thing is real or not. The timing seems all to coincidental, on the other hand, a major Al Queda plot timed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of 9/11 is certainly possible if not probable.

It's just sad that even if there was a real terror threat that they've cried "wolf" so often that a fairly large part of the population doesn't believe them.

32. Ha! We'll see whether there actually was a plot in the coming months
Like the Ricin plot that never was. The Met have a history of this kind of overblown nonsense.

And why do we always have to tighten security up in the immediate aftermath of some big event (or non-event), exactly when something is least likely to happen, and then relax security later? This accomplishes nothing except pissing everybody off.

35. I am beyond mad this morning, so I apologize in advance for bad language

But I am in full-on rant mode, and I'm super pissed.

I keep hearing people on the news, being interviewed in our local airport, saying they're just glad we've been protected. Well, fuck the brand of protection given to us by our governments. I, FOR ONE, WOULD RATHER BE COMFORTABLE ON A FLIGHT THAN "PROTECTED." Would someone please prove to me that all the ridiculous security measures we have suffered through and continue to suffer through (and whatever new security measures they'll think up in the future) have actually done anything real to protect me?

My husband's on the phone with his family in England right now. Everybody was planning on coming here soon for a big two week holiday. We were going to have a blast. Now, my sister-in-law will probably have to stay home. Why? She has a baby. And she's been told that she can only carry a limited amount of formula/milk, and only the diapers and wipes that she can carry on her person. What the fuck? Does no one have any common sense anymore? I'm going to look for online stores where the whole family can order cargo pants, reporter's vests, etc., so they can wear them on board and stuff themselves with baby gear.

My MIL said that they're being told that this may last only a week or so. I say don't bet on it. As long as the Bush/Blair administrations are getting political leverage from it, it will stick. It will quietly stop when either poll numbers get too low, or when the airlines start raising hell because they're losing too much business because passengers have said enough's enough, we won't be treated like animals.

Well, sorry it was rambling, but thanks for letting me VENT!!!!!
