Poll question: I call Bullshit on this foiled terror plot, who is with me?
I ain't buying this chicken little bullshit about foiled terror plots. Look at the timing, look at the press conferences, look at the bushmedia, this is all bullshit designed to keep us focused on the fear.

But, maybe I'm wrong, I have been before.

I'm a skeptic, but I haven't heard enough to believe it's all part of an elaborate bush/condi/blair/cheney scheme. Even though it seems otherwise at times, their influence only extends so far.

29. That's Obvious
They have overstepped in every way on every front, and they need to look like they're accomplishing something.

This smells like the "shoe bomber" story. An idiot lights a match on a sealed plane, doesn't expect anyone to smell that, to ignite a fuse on a device that was never tested, that later even experts with detonators could not make explode.

So, just because some dumbass talks about making a bomb and putting it on a plane, doesn't mean there was really any threat. Could be just some idiots making noise about how tough they are. That doesn't make them right, mind you. Talking about blowing up innocent people is stupid and wrong. But, talking about it and having the ability to actually do it are two VERY different things.

So, they trumpet this thing to the heavens about how "efficient" and "successful" they are, but there is no real evidence to the public that these buffoons had any hope of carrying out this hairbrained plan.

35. I'm with you
Just because someone is foolish enough to concoct a scheme like this doesn't mean there was even a remote possibility it could have worked.

I do think Bush/Blair and the neo-cons are ratcheting this incident up to make it seem much more of a threat than it actually was.

A dishonest government that uses psyops is the question. Of course there will be real ones. It's not knowing which are real and which are manipulation is the question.

10. I believe there was a plot to blow up passenger jets, yes.
I fully expected this. Terrorists WERE foiled years ago, planning to blow up 12 jumbo jets simultaneously; a bombed Phillippines plane was "practice". The French foiled a plot to dive-bomb the Eiffel Tower with a 747. There WAS Pan Am 103.

Summer is just the season for it (well, when it isn't Christmas), even if we do it to ourselves (TWA 800).

Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 08:06 AM by Douglas Carpenter
To have faked a plot of this scale would have required the cooperation of a very large section of the British civil service which is more sheltered from politics than the American system. I find that unlikely.

The fact that the news of this plot will be used by the demagogues of the "war on terror" is another matter.

But I think we need to wait and see what facts come out later.

They say they've known about this for months, and that they've had an undercover agent in the group for a year. So why didn't they thwart the plot in time to make shutting down the airports unecessary?

I believed the story simply because the Bush monarchy hadn't come up with it. But England has their Dubya in Tony Blair, and now the story is unraveling faster than a stripper costume.

45. I think the police think it's genuine
because the restrictions on hand luggage have completely screwed up Britain's airports, in the middle of the vacation season. Literally hundreds of flights have been cancelled. There's a lot of seriously pissed off people, and if they find out the police didn't have good reasons for it, the police will look complete idiots - and they've looked imcompetent since killing de Menezes, and then even more so at Forest Gate.

If it was just a ruse to turn up the fear and uncertainty a bit, they've had announced the arrests, and told people to be careful. The police may be wrong, but they wouldn't do this just for PR reasons. They can't afford to make things up at the moment.

Just enough detail to let you know that it just almost like some 12 year old plot. Route it through the Brits (remember the yellow cake documents) to reduce skepticism and trot them out first. Give Skeletor a microphone and let him put the meter to red. Bring two nations to a standstill.

My husband called me from work and asked me if I had heard about this. He said, "This is BS, everyone says it's BS. Lieberman losing scared them alot. They had to do something and I bet they've had this one in the back of the drawer for a while in case of an emergency. Lieberman made the emergency."

They don't even wait til October for surprises any more.

50. I call bullshit on the conspiracy theorists, implying this is all madeup
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Bojinka

In 1994, Yousef and Khalid Sheik Mohammed started testing airport security. Yousef booked a flight between Kai Tak International Airport in Hong Kong and Chiang Kai Shek International Airport near Taipei. Mohammed booked a flight between Ninoy Aquino International Airport near Manila and Kimpo International Airport near Seoul.

The two had already converted fourteen bottles of contact lens solution into bottles containing nitroglycerin, which was readily available in the Philippines. Yousef taped a metal rod to the arch of his of foot in place of the detonators. Yousef and Mohammed wore jewelry and clothing with metal to confuse airport security.

On December 11, 1994, Yousef built another bomb, which had one tenth of the power that his final bombs were planned to have, in the lavatory of the aircraft and left it inside the life jacket under his seat, 26K, after he got off the plane from a flight that arrived in Cebu. Yousef had boarded the flight under the assumed name of Armaldo Forlani, using a false Italian passport. The aircraft was Philippine Airlines Flight 434 using that aircraft on a Manila to Narita route. Yousef had set the timer for four hours after he got off the aircraft. The bomb exploded while the aircraft was over Minami Daito Island, near Okinawa, Japan. A Japanese businessman named Haruki Ikegami was killed after the bomb detonated. The Boeing 747-200 safely made an emergency landing in Naha, Okinawa. None of the aircraft's other 272 passengers or any members of the crew were killed, although 10 passengers in front of Ikegami were injured. Yousef then planned which flights to attack for Phase I.
