400 Detention Officers needed in Maricopa County AZ
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 07:46 AM by KayLaw
I live in Florida and saw this ad in the Help Wanted section of our little freebie paper. Doesn't that seem like a large number of new hires for some county in Arizona? Who are all these detainees they have or plan to receive, I wonder? This link was included in the ad: www.mcso.org

$14.99/hour, no experience needed, excellent benefits.

2. The way that sherriff in Maricopa treats inmates
He probably has a lot of VERY pissed off prisoners and a high turnover rate.

3. Bingo
Arpaio is a nazi, and no-one with any humanity wants to work for him. Half of the complaints come from inmates, the other half from staff (or ex-staff, usually).

4. And, here are some of the job duties:

The duties of a Detention Officer include but are not limited to:

• Performing inmate cell searches.

• Performing searches of inmates and visitors.

• Performing strip searches of inmates.

• Conducting continual visual surveillance of inmates and various areas of detention facilities.

• Selecting and operating appropriate buttons, switches and knobs used to control doors, sliders and communication systems.

• Monitoring and controlling all activities regarding inmate movement.

• Managing interpersonal conflicts to maintain order.

• Pursuing fleeing inmates on foot.

• Using body force to gain entrance through barriers to seize or rescue inmates.

• Subduing resisting inmates using approved non lethal weapons i.e.; pepper spray (chemical discharge containing Oleo Resin Capsicum), stun devices (short duration exposure containing 50,000 volts and .0004 amps).

• Performing basic first aid procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed.

Applicants will be screened for aptitude for violence and ability to inflict pain and suffering. Previous military police or prisoner interrogation experience in Iraq/Afghanistan theater of operations strongly preferred. EOE S/M employer.

6. That was my first thought
When I went to that site though, I was struck by the touchy-feely "caring" language and was extra baffled. I saw the ad yesterday and woke up thinking about it. . .Oh, well.

8. This is probably in response to his border round ups of
undocumented Mexicans. He and his men have been driving around sweeping them up in vans. He doesn't, however, bother to arrest the owners of many businesses who use these same people as cheap labor.

Maricopa County is quite large, geographically speaking, and the population is growing.

400 is probably overkill (pun intended) but ol' Sheriff Joe is known for overkill.
