......that thwarted this plot - NOT the U.S. Marines - Not the U.S. Army -
NOT the Alabama National Guard.

The "war on terror" IS a law enforcement issue.

http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/videos500251.shtml

U.S. Aware Of Plot For Days

Jim Axelrod spoke with Press Secretary Tony Snow about the U.S.'s involvement in the British investigation of the alleged terrorist plot. Snow says President Bush has been aware of the plot for days.

They also knew about the 9/11 plot for 18 months

It was planned at an al-Qaeda summit in Kuala Lumpur that was attended by Atta's roommate and the Flt. 77 hijackers. The CIA videotaped the whole thing and then followed the Flt 77 hijackers as they entered the US on 01/15/00 - the FBI liason at the CIA Counter-Terrorism Center was ordered not to send a cable about their entry to the FBI National Security Office in NY.

The Agency and a couple foreign intel agencies illegally monitored the plot inside the US without obtaining FISA warrants. For some reason we don't understand yet, that surveillance was relaxed enough in the late summer of 2001 so Atta and the gang could carry off the plot that the Agency had told the Bushites about much earlier. See the link below for all the details, citations, sources, links.

See, Scoop: UQ Wire: THE CRIMES OF 9/11 (Part 4)In early summer 2001 , US officials received numerous warnings from domestic and foreign intelligence agencies that al-Qaeda terrorists planned ...

11. Uh not to be picky........but no it wasn't exactly.......
They were acting on intelligence supplied by MI5. They operate under the authority of the Home Secretary....currently John Reid, who at the moment is in charge of the UK whilst Tony is taking a holiday. The War on Terror may be a law enforcement issue, but there's politics still muddying the waters tyvm.

37. Slight nitpick
True, MI5 stands for "Military Intelligence Section 5". Problem is, the entity you're referring to isn't called "MI5", and hasn't been since 1931, when it was renamed the "Security Service". It's attached to the Home Office, not the military. Your mistake is understandable, since the defunct name "MI5" is so popularly entrenched, even the Security Service itself uses it. It's a nickname, and since it has no official standing, it could be argued that it doesn't really stand for anything.

40. Now that's nitpicking........
Last time I checked it was still called MI5 and that was on the BBC here in the UK about 2 minutes ago. I never said it was attached to the Military either........you just assumed that I did because I said the M stood for Military....again a simple mistake on your part.

>>>We are a civilian organisation and members of staff have no executive powers, such as the authority to detain or arrest people. We are not a "secret police force".

Our investigations are shared with the police or other law enforcement agencies when there is a prospect of the arrest of people who are committing or planning criminal offences. Over a number of years we have developed and applied procedures that enable our intelligence to be admitted as evidence in criminal proceedings (see "Evidence and Disclosure"). In addition, we may recommend to the Home Office or to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office that known terrorists or foreign intelligence officers, for example, be refused entry to the UK or be deported or expelled. However, the decision whether to do so lies outside the Service.

29. MI-5 is in many ways unique.
They actually plan missions with specific outcomes (MOSSAD does the same thing they probably learned this from the British).

Who really knows what the CIA and other well funded lettered agencies does anymore now that it is almost entirely a controlled political entity and professionals are under attack by political hacks. The Bush Cheney culture of secrecy and subversion of the law fits well into renegade elements of the intelligence community.
