I'm waiting for the hard hitting Democratic response...
In these waning months of such an important election cycle, I expect we'll see Democrats come out with fists swinging at the swift boating that's been going on for the last 12 hours. It's not like they haven't see it all before. I'm sure they have a series of PSA lined up and ready to go since the GOP already telegraphed the nature of their offensive against Democrats when the memos detailing this strategy were leaked recently. With that sort of advanced warning, I can only imagine the devastating effectiveness we will be seeing from our leadership shortly.

I'd imagine the party leaders met shortly afterward and started to contact fellow Democrats across the country to begin laying the groundwork for this counter offensive. Perhaps in addition to media buys, they are staging protests at key locations such as airports and are staffing phone banks full of eager Democrats ready to contact everyone from local newspapers & call in radio shows to local and state Democratic organizations looking to the party for leadership on how to proceed.

I’ll bet they are also planning something symbolic and creative like a sky-writing campaign over major cities that will spread the message of Bush’s many failures in protecting Americans and their interests both at home and abroad. There will be surprise celebrity appearances on popular talk shows where prominent friends of Democrats will use the moment to cut down the GOP meme spreading like filthy flood waters over our airwaves and into the heads of citizens looking for answers.

I’m sure they have rallies against this fear mongering planned, and people signed up to bus, feed, inform and entertain concerned citizens from across the country, lifting this pallor of death and showing them what a free America could look like. To remind them of what it used to look like. Stadiums across the country will be filled with people who reject the hate and the fear, and who instead look toward a brighter tomorrow.

Can you imagine the surprise when Democratic spokesmen leave the script and start asking hard questions of the biased journalists they are sitting across? The confused looks on the faces of men like Tim Russert when faced on live television with proof of their professional malfeasance? It will make George Galloway’s rhetoric seems tame by comparison, I’m sure. Republicans across the country will be demoralized.

The kettle will really start to boil when the buyouts of high profile RW media outlets start to happen and the people who’ve had RW trash talk funneled into them for years start to hear the truth. Who knows? Maybe the national strike they have planned won’t be needed after all, but as the opposition party, I’m sure that’s also been planned, just in case.

I wonder how long before it all begins. I can’t wait.

6. Dems+coordinated=oxymoron (too often)
Perhaps it's like Will Rogers said, "I am not a member of any organized party. I am a Democrat."

8. Or so the RW frame goes.
No, I'm not calling you a RWer, fellow Cheesehead. But we have to stop advancing these narratives that only hurt us.

19. Am I asking for too much in an election year?
It's not the absence of a backup plan that bothers me as much as the absence of any plan. It just seems like individual politicians are left to fend on the sea of public opinion with whatever resources they alone have been able to gather.

It's not like we don't have the resources to do this, it's just a matter of organization and leadership.

5. The blame for some of what you say doesn't just belong...

...with elected Dems. Try to convince the Progressive groups with money that we need to buy media outlets. It's not easy. But we have to start DEMANDING it from them. Next time you send, say MoveOn, a check, tell them you want a Progressive media machine to rival the RW's. Hell, call 'em once a week and remind 'em.

Thanks for posting this.

NGU.

11. I'd not blaming Dems, certainly not those who try so hard...
I'm encouraging the ones who do not to start standing tall and start aligning money and mouths. As you say, we have to start demanding this.

Thanks for replying!

15. I recall finding the WRS back when I first heard Mike Malloy...
on IE America Radio. IE was so small and poorly webcast that half the time I went straight to the WRS to download the show and listen afterward. This was also a great way to bring new progressives into the larger Democratic community as the MP3's are highly portable and the programs could be circulated around easily. Being able to listen offline and find older shows increases the value of these programs tremendously.

Ben wrings value out of every cent he's given to run the place. It's a wise investment.

and he would be much more aggressive if he had the support to do so. When he does get aggressive, other elements in the party tend to bite him back. That's the reflex I'd like to see disappear. At least during elections, for goodness sake.
