Why are we all such tinfoil hatters?
It's pretty obvious, if you think about it. Today's case is another example of why. We were being told this morning that terrorists were first identified weeks ago, but just arrested now, SO NOW THERE'S A TERRIBLE THREAT SO WE HAVE TO RAISE THE WARNING LEVELS TO RED. The terrorists were being followed for the past several weeks, our officials knew about it YET BUSH HAS TO MAKE AN UNSCHEDULED PRESS STOP (which by the way was timed to the minute perfectly, including the landing of AF1 5 minutes before it started) TO TELL US WE NEED TO BE AFRAID. We were told a laughable story about how they were planning on using binary explosives WHICH THEY WERE GOING TO SET OF WITH AN MP3 PLAYER AND A FLASHBULB, it was to be detonated electronically but IT HAD TO BE MIXED BY HAND BEFORE THE EXPLOSION WHICH WOULD TIP OFF ANYONE SEARCHING CARRY-ON BAGS OR ANYBODY ELSE WATCHING. At least one source said they were making explosives out of Gatorade or a Gatorade-like drink. And after all this, the terrorists were caught, everything was alright, YET THE SECURITY WARNING LEVEL IS STILL RAISED TO RED AND THE NEWS CHANNELS ALL HAVE GONE TO 24 HOUR DISCUSSIONS ABOUT HOW UNSAFE WE ALL ARE AND WHY WE MUST TORTURE ISLAMISTS.

Yeah, you really have to wonder why so many people are conspiracy theorists...

3. Your moment of zen....
Here's what comes to my twisted mind:

(Ghostbusters HQ)
(Peter is standing outside watching Marty hang up the "Ghostbusters" sign.)
Peter: You don't think it's too subtle, Marty? You don't think people are going to drive down and not see the sign?

5. Even the pro-Iraq/* lovers think it's a joke.
They're not saying why, but they are laughing at it, here north of Houston.

"Hey Bubba, are ya gonna cancel your trip to Paris?" "Hell no! Darn French!"

They also smell a rat, but won't name it.

8. You want a fundamental reason? I've got one...

We don't trust our government anymore.

For most of our lives, government was a benevolent force, owned and controlled ultimately by the people acting in unison, and trusted to use its authority in our best interests.

Now, ownership of the government has been stripped from us through election fraud and campaign brainwashing. And our government officials, who once valued openness and accountability, now lie to us and keep secrets from us. The bond of trust between the people and their government is gone.

Now, the government, stripped of accountability, is now capable of anything, so we start speculating as to what our officials are doing. Whatever they are doing, we're pretty certain they are NOT acting in our best interests anymore.

9. That's exactly it
People make jokes about conspiracy theories, but what else do we have? We KNOW the government is lying, and their message is always "Trust us or else!" With that, and an absence of facts, what are we left with but to make conspiracy theories?

13. The media plays a huge role in this.
Their job is to take the "official story" and investigate - keep the government honest and expose what isn't true. This isn't happening anymore.

16. No Trust
This is what I tell folks who argue for bushco... "The difference between you and me is that you still trust the government, I don't."

Thing is they know better. They know they can't trust bushco. They just need to be reminded of that on ocassion. Actually, I think they rather appreciatte the reminder.

10. LIES LIES LIES
I told my father this exact thing last night when discussing the alleged terror plot: WHY should I believe anything our government and the media tells us? Neither deserves any credibility or benefit of the doubt. If the media did their job and investigated the "official story" once in a while, things might be different, but they don't. They take whatever they're fed as truth and pass it on to us.

NOTHING Bushco has done has given me reason to believe what they say. NOTHING.

And I would say this to the people that make fun of conspiracy theories - whenever this government says anything, the fact that they are saying it is the best reason not to believe it!
