CNN is now calling it an "alleged" plot. Working on new AQ meme. |
|
Kelly Arena is now poo-pooing the whole notion of Al Qaida involvement, saying "What really is Al Qaida anymore? Is it a movement, or an idea?" This is getting kind of surreal.

6. No, yesterday it was a real attack that was thwarted at the last minute |
|
Come on, where were you? No one used the words "alleged" yesterday, not on the American media. And now they're saying that Al Qaida might not really even exist, after bludgeoning us over the head with it for five years? You don't find that odd? I'm not trying to claim any wacky conspiracy theory or anything, I'm just a little baffled about why today is so different than yesterday and the last five years.

The spokesman for the English Authorities said 'alleged' quite clearly in his announcement. The BBC showed it verbatim. (Unlike the U.S. where currently the media is more likely to show a still picture of the spokesman while some overpaid talking head fills in the pre-ordained talking points from the sidelines.)

That is the term that the majority of responsible journalists use in describing what any person may be accused of. If the accused is convicted, the wording changes to reflect that. The use of the word "alleged" is not unusual, and does not reflect any change in the reporter's perception of the alleged plot.

I didn't watch much of the news yesterday. I still would not see that the change qualifies as "surreal." I tend to think of "surreal" as something other than the addition of an accurate adjective to describe something. However, as John wrote in one of the most famous of his surreal songs, "No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low. That is you can't you know tune in, but it's all right. That is I think it's not too bad." Now if only reporters would sing that .....

I know what alleged means. And I know what "the majority of responsible journalists" do. But we're not talking about them, we're talking about the American media and CNN in particular.
IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE, the word "alleged" is quite unusual, because yesterday NOTHING was alleged. Tens of thousands of people were stopped in their tracks, international commerce was interrupted, and we were treated to an endless barage of administration talking heads who I don't recall ever once using the words "alleged." And the media dutifully played right along. According to every talking head on American media yesterday, this wasn't an alleged plot...thousands of lives were saved in the nick of time. "WE" (BushCo) broke up (bullshit; UK did) an active plot to kill us all.
But today, it's alleged. Come out from under your bed now, the pollster is at the door!

For a long time now, the American people have been duped into thinking that we were fighting some sort of specific group called "Al Qaeda", as if they had a membership list and a corporate HQ. Getting them to understand that terrorists can come from anywhere may be the first step in renouncing the insane Bush Doctrine that links stopping terrorism to invading and conquering Muslim nations.

By the time I went to bed, it was reduced to a dry run of a dry run. And seeing as how they'd found out about it months before, I don't understand why the plot was allowed to escalate to the point where the airports had to be shut down and people had to throw away their lipstick. It's coming apart faster than a stripper costume!

Ain't that the truth. Why were all these steps taken over a dry run of a dry run, of something they knew about for months? This will wind up being just like the other bogus scares. The plot is probably real, but the hype and bullshit is...well...hype and bullshit.

sensitive to the timing of the release of this 'alleged' plot and how it would affect politics here in the U.S.
They had to do something and hopefully by being after the bulk of the primaries and this far before the November elections. It will make a minimal disruption.
I tip my hat to them and I am grateful for the effort.
I was appalled at how the media and various politicians and political parties in the U.S. postured and pandered yesterday. It was disgusting.

31. Yes, but, there were reports the Administration wasn't notified... |

until Wednesday night. (So, to prevent leaks)
Somebody over there knew what a circus this would turn into in the current American political/media climate and there was some effort to mitigate the damage. Not to do so would hand the terrorist what they sought.
It displays a certain cynicism about how grown up we are here in America tho...
We'll have to work on that.

I don't see the media as quite the corporate whores that a lot of other people around here do.
Quite the contrary, I see them following the doctrine that FDR laid down in the 30's - if you want the inside scoop, you play ball by the administration's rules. If you want to be left out in the cold, you don't. It's that simple. I think the conservative bias is more reflected in the notion that if you want to find out what's going on in Washington, you have to kiss ass or the scoop is going to your competitor.
Now that we're inching closer to November and the polls are still indicating that tidal wave is coming, the media is starting to creep back over to the left, ever so slowly. They see the handwriting on the wall.
On edit: With a divided government (ie Democratic Congress, Repub White House or vice-versa), the media will play more to the overwhelming trend. In the 90's, the country was swaying to the right, and the media reflected that. Corporate whoredom is also more prevalent.
(Note: this does not apply to Fox News.)
