The D-Day of our time? 11/7/00 |
|
Edited on Fri Aug-11-06 10:19 AM by LibraLiz1973
So I went to see WTC yesterday. I was in a theater with a bunch of people wearing 9/11 shirts etc. After the movie I heard a group of guys talking about how the movie really illustrated to them the difference in the world after 9/11. That one sentence led me to revisiting when I think America changed- and I realized that was BEFORE 9/11.
While many people over the last 5 years have said something along the lines of "You can look at the world in 2 ways- Pre 9/11 and Post 9/11) I have come to realize thats not quite true.
IMHO there was life BEFORE 11/7/2000 and life AFTER 11/7/2000. Since that day a chain of events has taken place that before hand would have seemed impossible. Let's review. (I'm sure I'll miss some)
1. Stolen Election- 2000 2. GWB Spent more time on vacation than any other President in History 3. Millions of Americans have fallen from the "Middle Class" 4. Deficit at an all time high 5. "President" and his cronies ignored Pre 9/11 intelligence 6. When told Nation was under attack, GWB did nothing 7. In retribution for 9/11 GWB attacked Iraq... who had done nothing 8. His environmental policies (or,non policies)are literally destroying the earth 9. Stole the 2004 election 10. Katrina Catastrophe 11. His administration outed a CIA agent 12. Nominated a woman with NO experience to the Supreme Court 13. Tax Cuts........for the reich- oops,I mean the rich 14. Gas prices at an all time high 15. Hatred of America at an all time high 16. Thousands of Americans dead in a war we DON'T BELONG IN
Since 11.7.00 America has become a boiling pot of rage. Everyone is SO angry. I'm one of the angry people!! It's fucking AMAZING to me (amazing and galling) that these bastards get to come out with one vitriolic spew after another where they say that Democrats are soft on Terrorism. DEMOCRATS? REALLY? The biggest terrorist attack on America didn't occur during a Democrats time in office. That honor goes to GWB. We will continue to live under a cloud of terror as long as he and his cronies are in charge. They will do nothing to stop anything else from happening- they LOVE this shit! It takes the bad press away from other issues. It's SICKENING that GW is in power YET HE NEVER WON AN ELECTION!!!!!!!!!!! He's making decisions for our country, and ruining it in the process, without ever having won. He TOOK office- he was not appointed to it.
Yes, America has changed. Yes, it is not the safest place anymore. Yes, we are in big trouble. It is for all of those reasons that we need a Democrat, now more than ever, to get in there and start fixing this. The Republicans are in the process of destroying the fabric of our society. They are so evil they have convinced MILLIONS of people (Millions of MORONS.. that's right, I said it)that unless they remain in power, America is in jeopardy. Amazing! The very people that got us into this situation are the ones benefiting from it! Since 11/7 the nation has fallen back about 50 years... Bush is at the helm of the "Dumbing Down of America". I listen to some of the Repug talking points that come out of these peoples mouths and I want to puke. It's all bullshit, yet they recite it with such fervor.
Since 11/7 America has gone from having Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press to The Patriot Act- designed to keep you quiet OR ELSE. And the press? They drank the kool aid and haven't stopped misdirecting us since 11/7.
We're stuck with the dumbest President ever. I would not let him teach my children- and yet he is running our country.
Next time you see a bumper sticker that says "Remember 9/11" take a minute to also remember 11/7- for without 11/7, September 11 would probably not have happened.

1. You're talking truths there |

He's also responsible for ruining some relationships between some of my friends and family- pitting us against each other- those who buy into the fear he pitches and me who was suspect from the beginning.

3. I've heard a lot of people ask... |
|
"Why are they destroying the country?"
It's likely that the country is already done. It's a process that's been underway for decades, maybe even the last hundred years. You are seeing an empire in the early stages of collapse.
Right now, TPTB are trying to manage the collapse in their best interests. They are remodeling the house. If your house is old and needs remodeling, you don't just roll on a new coat of paint. You rip out the walls, tear up the carpet, take out the wiring and replace it with something completely new. Unfortunately, I don't think that the people are going to be very happy when they see what the new house looks like when it's finished. By that time, it will be too late to do anything about it.

5. Yep, this process started a LONG time ago - it's just a really slow boil |
|
If they did it quickly everyone would have screamed - so they take their time, and people barely notice the changes as they happen - inching further and further to the right, and further and further into the authoritarian/rich_is_right mindset until it's too late, you've fallen off the edge of the abyss and can't get back to where you started.

6. you may have a point, but |
|
you don't just rip out the walls - you shore them up first to make sure it doesn't collapse and kill all of us peon workers who are trying to fix it. You turn off the electricity first, etc. In other words, you need to plan and communicate what you are doing.
The powers that be have stolen their power and are destroying the house, but instead of rebuilding it, they are selling it off to us at inflated prices and we are stuck living on the street.
bad analogy, imo. welcome to DU.

19. My own interests, thank you. |

Considering that half of the country believes that Saddam had something to do with 9/11, and 1/3 can't even remember what year 9/11 happened, and probably 9 out of 10 people have never heard that global oil production has almost peaked, and most of those who have heard think that some kind of alternative energy will save us, and global warming is an action movie, and 92% of the public believes in god, and 82% in miracles...The dumbed-down sheep are now almost completely delusional.
Good luck everybody. I'm building my own lifeboat. Every man/woman/community for him/her/their self. At least the Neocons have taught me the role of evolution and human nature.

21. meh, have fun with that |

In my opinion, the Neocons don't understand all of human nature, just the crappy side of it. And they obviously do not understand evolution beyond the Reptilian Cortex that they seemed to stop with, which is why we're in the state you complain about; perhaps if they had not been busy gutting science, education, critical thinking, human rights, and everything else they can profit from those "statistics" would be less scary.
But whatever.
There's nothing wrong with taking care of yourself or your family/loved ones, but in my opinion it does a great disservice to everyone to do so at the expense of everyone, including to yourself and your family. If you can't fathom why negatively affecting the society in which you live affects you as well, then perhaps you need to sit and think about it some more before claiming to understand evolution.
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I don't see the point in being selfish, and even more so in broadcasting that selfishness to a group of people who are trying to make a positive change in the world despite the odds.
Good luck.

and things are going to get very crappy soon. When people get hungry, things get nasty fast. And people in North America aren't used to being uncomfortable. Just try telling them they can't get gas or Cheetos and watch what happens.
Aside from that, most of the people I see trying to change the system are trying to do it using the same tactics that haven't worked before.
For example, too many people want to deal with the coming energy crisis by switching to electric cars and hybrids, when the bigger problem is how we are going to feed ourselves. We need to build lifeboats, rather than jumping from the Titanic to the Britannia.
We can't complain about Americans dying in Iraq, then jump in our cars and drive to the mall to buy a new air conditioner.
Most people in North America are not ready to make the kind of sacrifices that will be necessary for an orderly transition to a future with less energy. I think that TPTB understand this and are preparing for the coming shitstorm in a manner that benefits them, and benefits whatever is left of the empire. I'm prepared to do the same for my tribe.
Good luck to you too.

don't think that you can vote your way out of this mess.
Republicans, Democrats, different puppets, same show. Vote with your wallet instead.
But. that's probably more pain than most people are willing to endure.

I vote with my wallet, my voice and with actual voting. While I can be cynical, I don't think it's useless, although I do think the process needs some work including being open to more parties and people.
I used to think they were the same: the last 5 years has proven that wrong, imo.

And so is "everyone for themselves". Doesn't require any participation.

PNAC...that's why. Resource wars, getting the US strategic interests to surround the new threat, China. Extending political power without accountability. Crushing of dissent, etc. There are LOTS of reasons why the government, especially the Bush government, would do something like that.
As for #2, beats the hell out of me, but number one doesn't necessitate #2, anyways. One can believe in LIHOP or MIHOP without the need for the planes to be anything but what the government said they were.

is also 11.7
Maybe this time, the people we vote for will win. Kicking the shit out of some republican hacks and giving them trashbags to pack up their shit will certainly be a good starting off point for 08.
