2. Radio host Guy James thinks Romney will be the GOP candidate...
Freeps are severely divided over McCain, while Giuiani and Frist carry too much baggage.

In the homes of Mr. & Mrs. Middle American, Romney's still "unknown." We shall see...

3. they like unknowns. Unsuspecting americans can easily be led
and fooled.
And most americans would figure, "Hell, he has to be better than what we have now."

4. I think I can safely say
That there will be a woman president before there is a mormon president.

In my view, anyone gullible enough to be a mormon (or a scientologist) is automatically disqualified from the presidency. Your milage may vary.

And as far as the republican "base" goes, fundy christians aren't exactly tolerant of mormons. Me, I think they have the right to their religion, just like any other, but I'm going to yank their chain for being so damn gullible.

6. there;'s a fair amount of debate
vis a vis romney on many rightwing blogs (from atheists, evangelicals, mormons, etc.)

i think the most compelling case is this

many evangelicals think mormonism is a cult bastardization of christianity

but they (generally speaking) see in many mormons, a common cause vis a vis govt. policy. obviously, there are exceptions - see: harry reid.

but mormons are 'reliably republican' to the same extent that jews and blacks are "reliably democrat'. there are exceptions, but they are just that. most (about 70-85% DEPENDING ON THE GROUP) vote in that partisan manner

the point i saw made (that sounds reasonable) is that, while evangelicals STRONGLY disagree with mormons on a doctrinal basis, they see a very common cause with romney types as to policy and that they do not vote for a candidate based on the candidates specific doctrine, as much as they vote for a candidate whom they think will support legislation/policies that is consistent with their beliefs

iow, i think there is a strong argument that evangelicals would vote for romney in large #'s

also, recall the handwringing over kennedy's catholicism (not to mention the claims of dual loyalty, papacy, etc.) that turned out not to be the issue that many pundits thought it to be - "america won't elect a catholic president" etc.

7. He has a BIG issue to overcome. He ran as a pro-choice candidate
Edited on Fri Aug-11-06 10:41 AM by Feeney2
and has since turned 180 degrees. This is a tough hurdle for him with the anti-choice crowd. They may mistrust him. We, in Mass., have always knew him as a liar on this issue, but he hasn't done anything to make the anti-choice crowd happy in Mass. This can't make them too happy and as more of a reason to mistrust him. He has no record in Mass. so this is a good thing for him in his run for Pres.
