Does Your State Issue A Voter ID Card?
I used to live in Florida. Maybe not now, but back then, the county or state issued a Voter Identification Card which had some of your particulars printed on it.

We moved to West Virginia years ago. We registered to vote here immediately of course. This state also issued us a Voter Identification Card. It has the same information on it the old Florida card had - Name, date of birth, address, Precinct, Date of issue, and a number which presumably refers back to my position on some master list somewhere.

Each of the cards was free. I do not recall that I had to show any sort of ID to get either one; that was then, this is now.

I ask this question because some states are now requiring state-issued ID to vote. I have always presumed that the officials at the voting place could demand to see my card anytime they wanted to. So I always take it to the polls with me. No one has ever asked to see it (current card issued in 1996).

What if anything does your state give you when you register?

7. Actually I Never Thought So. I Saw It More As A Receipt
It made it undeniable that I was registered.

Actually did have to take out its predecessor once. When we moved to this place (we were in a different county for the first 2 years) I went to the wrong place to vote. I was in the right building (high school) but on the wrong floor. The lady looked at my card, saw the precinct number, and directed me down stairs to the right room.

So the card did some good. Notice, however, that the card was not required to vote. I think that makes the difference in today's circumstance.

My card is a reminder and receipt, not a requirement. At least that's how it seems to me. So, is that a problem? I do not ask the question in an argumentative way, only to see what others think about it.

2. Oregon votes by mail.

So there is no "Check-in" at the polls... because we don't have polling places. :)

However, I moved to a new town about a year ago and it took me 3 tries just to get registered - and I didn't receive a registration card. Every other time I've registered before, I got my card in the mail almost immediately (accept when used the form off of the DNC site - that has never worked for me).

3. Mississippi issues a "Voter Registration Card"
It has alot of good info on it, like what congressional district you live in, voting precinct location, state senate and house districts and school board location. Also has your SSN, but no picture. Its very handy and is easy to get however no one asks for it when you vote, which is silly to me. Why issue the damn thing. I always have it and my driver's license out when I vote, when I give it to the poll worker, they look at me like I'm from Mars.

4. Georgia has a similar card, but they never ask to see
it when I vote. All that's required is my driver's license.

5. Here in Deep East Texas our card(s) are color coded.
Which changes each year. This year they are yellow. And yes they ask to see them and check your name off the master list that you MUST sign. I also voluntarily show my DL. So I don't know if that is required or not. Your card is also stamped that you voted.

We do this every time we vote, even though this is a small rural precinct and all the precinct workers know us on sight, and could quote our family history without breaking a sweat.

Here is an old card of mine. I have hopefully redacted all the personal information. The card must be signed at the time you vote. The Cert. No 6408 changes with each card issued .

However, you are required to present a picture ID to vote.
