Why are Katrina Evacuee Trailers Full of Formaldehyde Gas?

Waxman to FEMA: Why are Katrina Evacuee Trailers Full of Formaldehyde Gas?

Reps. Charlie Melancon (D-LA) and House Reform Committee Ranking Member Henry Waxman (D-CA) sent a letter today to FEMA Director R. David Paulison demanding to know why 94% of trailers inhabited by evacuees of Hurricane Katrina contain formaldehyde gas in excess of the level considered safe by the EPA. Several trailers have more than three times above that amount, according to a Sierra Club study.

Formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen, can trigger several serious respiratory problems. The release of the toxic chemical seems to be a result of the wood used and is exacerbated by hot and humid air, meaning that exposure levels might be even higher now than they were when the tests were conducted in May.

just another way to kill off the people of New Orleans

and just another way to save money on making trailers - somebody paid off somebody

2. Probably formaldehyde foam insulation.
I thought it was banned. I used to sell the safe-tri=polymer replacement.

If the manufacturers are using it, they should be hanged.

6. And most carpets,
particle board, etc., have it if they are new. You can get this stuff new without the formaldehyde if you have the money to pay extra.

8. Because most of the building materials used...
in the US today are made with this chemical component. Every new house, every time you remodel, everytime you buy new furniture etc., you are exposing yourself and your family to this. It takes a minimum of 5 years for the materials to outgas before they are safe to be around.

It is not just the trailers that FEMA bought for NO and other disaster ares that have this problem, it is all new buildings etc. Have you ever walked into a new buiding and your eyes or nose begin to burn?
