Do Nothing George by Larry (CIA) Johnson
Let's at least give George W. Bush credit for being consistent. Prior to 9-11 he was warned on multiple occasions that Al Qaeda was ready to strike inside the United States. His response--do nothing. Now we are informed that Bush knew about the terrorist threat of liquid explosives since at least last Friday, 4 August 2006. According to Yahoo News: Snow said Bush first learned in detail about the plot on Friday, and received two detailed briefings on it on Saturday and Sunday, as well as had two conversations about it with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

What did George do? NOTHING. No effort, whatsoever, to raise the terrorist threat level. No effort to boost aviation security procedures. I traveled on British Air from Tanzania to London on Tuesday, August 8th. I traveled from London to Brussels on British Air on Tuesday, August 8th. I carried bottles of liquid on both flights. Blair and Bush knew about this since last Friday and did nothing? That's right.

Bush, like a 12 year old boy on summer vacation, waited and rode his bike around his Texas ranch. No effort to task TSA to come up with tools to detect liquid explosives. No new inspection procedures. Just enjoy his vacation. That, boys and girls, is how the first 9-11 happened. And Gorgeous George wants credit for keeping us safe at home? Not this time.

Never Unprepared!

2. That's not the way the MSM is portraying bush** and blair. They
are trying to make it sound like these two clown asswipes have suddenly developed the ability to walk on water and cure the blind.

And there's an awful lot of idiots on both sides of the Atlantic who will believe it.

5. Far be it for me to defend the Shrub
But if the Brits were close to apprehending these guys, wouldn't raising terrorist levels and raising alerts sort of alert the perpetrators as well, and muck up the investigation?

I can understand not saying much until the dudes were picked up. But Bush could have quietly gotten some plan together for how our airlines were going to handle security once the story broke. Mile-long lines at an airport are a disaster.

6. Good point

They say they acted because the Pakistanis had bought airline tickets (or so they say). Supposedly they were continuing to gather information. And if they acted sooner, possibly they would have lost out on some intelligence.

I don't always with agree with Johnson's analysis.

Airports could have been warned about liquid explosives without anyone on the outside being the wiser.

7. Well... it didn't stop them in 2004 from blowing a British operation
Right after the Democratic National Convention, they raised TERRA alert levels in New York and elsewhere, and Tom Ridge gave a press conference out of which came events that led to the direct naming of a "flipped" Pakistani informant, crucial to "the war on terror." As Juan Cole tells it,

When the British made their arrest, the Bush administration announced that among those captured was Abu Eisa al-Hindi, also known as Abu Musa al-Hindi (both are noms de guerre).

The British, especially MI5 and Home Secretary David Blunkett, had not wanted his name made public, and were furious at all of the detailed information being given out to the public by the Bush administration or in consequence of its revelations. For some reason, the British seem to have feared that the naming of Abu Eisa al-Hindi would complicate the case against him.

For me, Bush et al. ran out of benefit-of-the-doubt cards long ago.
