James Parkinson and Lee Benson chronicle the life of WWII soldier Harold Poole and his legal battle, along with other POWs, to seek restitution from Japanese companies that used them for slave labor following the Bataan Death March of April 1942. In the Bataan Death March, the Japanese soldiers marched Mr. Poole and other POWs 85 miles in Manila's blistering heat and then shipped them to work as slaves for private Japanese corporations. Approximately 1,000 American soldiers died on the march. During the event, Sen. Orrin Hatch discussed his support of legislation that will help American WWII veterans who were enslaved receive compensation for their labor. This event was hosted by Deseret Book Company in Salt Lake City, UT.

James Parkinson is a trial lawyer who was co-lead counsel in the JPOW case. He graduated from Brigham Young University and has law offices in Palm Desert, California. Lee Benson is a newspaper columnist for the Deseret Morning News in Salt Lake City. He is also the author of a number of books on subjects as diverse as the Olympic Games and the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart. He is a graduate of Brigham Young University and a Utah native.

Sharon Weinberger
direct video link - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/0806/btv080506_4c.ram

Sharon Weinberger discusses the U.S. government's history of funding unconventional weapons projects and assesses their feasibility. In particular, Ms. Weinberger traces the Defense Department's unsuccessful efforts to develop an isomer bomb, a grenade-sized explosive device which in theory would have the power of a nuclear bomb. Ms. Weinberger argues that there should be more oversight of such unconventional weapons programs that don’t work but continue get billions of dollars in funding. This event was held at Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC.

Sharon Weinberger is the editor-in-chief of Defense Technology International, a bimonthly editorial supplement to Aviation Week & Space Technology. Her writing on science and technology has also appeared in Slate and the Washington Post Magazine. Her book "Imaginary Weapons" originated as a series of articles she wrote for the Washington Post.

Carry A. Nation: Retelling the Life
Fran Grace

Fran Grace was a guest on Booknotes to talk about her biography, "Carry A. Nation." In the book, Ms. Grace discusses the life of a woman that drew on her exploration of the Holiness Religion to smash her first saloon in Kansas at the age of 54 in response to the constant violations of the state's prohibition law. The author argues that while most historians have characterized Ms. Nation as a fanatic, her story is much more complicated than that.

Fran Grace is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Redlands in Redlands, California.

63. To My Surprise, I Really Enjoyed This One
I was not originally intending to watch this program, put off by the usual stereotype of Carry Nation as a very grim fanatic, repressed, neurotic, etc., etc., smashing places where people only wanted to have fun, etc. Luckily though, this author has done a lot of real research and has come to the topic with a different, but not "new," perspective, and I think has explained the story very well--it was actually fascinating. I was wishing BookTV would replay this program, which they are not, but there is a transcript from it, http://www.booknotes.org/Transcript/?ProgramID=1640 . (Interesting thing about the transcript: it must be printed phonetically, by machine, or something, because at one point they spelled Chautauqua as "Shitakwa.")

Carry Nation seems a strange figure from a distant past that no longer relates to our living world, a moralizing strictness among our own current corporate fantasy-world of merciless exploitation; a distant grey among our own gaudy, vulgar, fake colorizing. Although she was very famous during her time and actually had a lot of popular support and many followers who also busted up saloons, she is almost never referred to in histories of America, social movements, or etc. Even Howard Zinn's "People's History of the United States," which has a lot of wonderful troublemakers, does not mention her. If she is ever mentioned anymore, it tends to be as a stereotype, and is always negative, as judged by people who seem to think that "loosening up morals" and "being tolerant" are the same thing. There is no real attempt to understand her, and much of the attack focuses on her looks or pseudo-psychological "diagnoses," such as "loosen up." The criticism of her always reveals a contempt of women, which was what a lot of this program was about.

This was actually a large part of the new author's focus, the fact that so little, non-bigoted, serious attention has ever been given to her, and an attempt to learn what the facts might really have been. One main area of discussion here was, why did she get so incensed by, obsessed by, the effects of alcohol, and saloons? There seem to be two possibilities: either it was an increasing awareness of the pattern of things, as when, for example, Progressives of the same time were campaigning against gambling and alcohol as a way that rich capitalists took poor people's money away from them, for nothing, and kept them in poverty and debt. The fact that Carry Nation's granddaughter, whose letters about her grandmother were mentioned, became a Marxist, and the fact that Carry Nation often was broke because she gave away her fees for speaking engagements to the poor of the town where she was, indicates a connection. This is also similar to campaigns in poor black neighborhoods, where malt liquor, crack cocaine, and etc., are associated with oppression to the white capitalists who sold it all, and profitted. Anti-liquor campaigns were by no stretch all "conservative," as they are sometimes pretended to be.

The other possibility was a personal experience of tragedy that turned her against alcohol, and that happened here. There was a reference to her first marriage, to what was probably the love of her life, an alcoholic who died after only several months of marriage, and for whom she yearned for years, even going to the grave regularly. She knew the damage. Further, it was a very hard life then, much worse for women than what exists today, and much of the program went over the details of her horrible, hopeless next marriage, to the abusive David Nation, her poverty, her being shut out of public speaking at the Church of that time, lack of medical care for her daughter, increasing depression, etc. It all added up to a very sympathetic and real presentation of a life at the turn of the century, with no Government help of any kind, no women's rights, etc.

The most interesting thing, I think, was to learn that she was funny, had a real gregarious personality, was very popular, and when she went out on the Vaudeville circuit as a Temperence speaker, she attracted huge crowds who cheered and laughed, etc. Her ranting and railing had a real humor to it, and was taken as fun as well as serious. There were accounts given of how popular and in-demand she was. People might not realize how the Vaudeville circuit worked this way with a lot of people you might not associate with it. Many people who became famous for some other reason, would then work up an act, with speeches, recitals, skits, maybe songs, etc., and put it all together as an act. Baseball players of the time did it a lot, recounting their baseball experiences, demonstrating slides, pitches and things, acting in skits, etc. "Turkey Mike" Donlin even quit baseball for a couple of years I think it was, to try to be a stage star. It was a really popular type of entertainment.

At one point, around 1900, she started smashing up saloons in Kansas, with a hatchet. They were generally always illegal ones, still operating and paying graft to local officials, after the citizens had voted for prohibition in their counties. There was popular support for this action, and many others joined and also smashed. Her witty term for this action was "hatchetation," after "agitation," the Abolitionist term. It had been mentioned that as a child, Carry, apparently hated by her parents, did not sleep in the house but slept with the slaves that the parents "owned." (There was a real and complicated background for all of this, and the fact that the author expressed opinions both pro and con about her and her actions, gave it all more credibility.) Later, when Carry Nation started a refuge for women who were poor and homeless, abused, or had other life-problems and no help, she called it Hatchet Hall. Hatchet Hall still exists today, but now as an apartment building; in Oklahoma. The combination of her troublemaking, religious-revival syle, and comedic personality and ways, made her very popular at the time, and much more interesting than anything that has been claimed about her. It was fun to listen to this program, and I found myself wanting to get a hatchet and go after Republicans and lobbyists, Halliburton, Enron, and all the rest.

Big Coal: The Dirty Secret Behind America's Energy Future
Jeff Goodell

Journalist Jeff Goodell speaks about his latest book, "Big Coal: The Dirty Secret Behind America's Energy Future." During this discussion, held at Tattered Cover Book Store in Denver, Mr. Goodell examines the environmental, political, and economic issues surrounding coal. He also explains how coal is developed and argues that coal not only brings prosperity but contributes to poverty, illiteracy, and sickness in coal mining communities. Additionally, Mr. Goodell examines how coal has contributed to air pollution, mercury poisoning in fish, landscape deterioration, and global warming of the planet. He concludes that the negative factors surrounding coal should be addressed before building more coal plants.

62. On now. He's telling some mildly amusing anecdotes.
Edited on Sun Aug-13-06 12:16 PM by Kurovski
He seems like a nice enough guy.

A Preznit George story is coming up soon, as of this post.

EDIT: Cute. he humanizes the Bush clan with a story of little chicken George daring poppy to jump in a lake. Big Mamoo (racist, nasty, elitist Babs) trills "Don't you dare!" daddy does it and gets eleven bucks from his psychotic, deranged and deeply troubled son and the photo-op continues on from there with further manufactured adorability as the grand-kids offer grand-poppy $1.98 to jump again.

I think my retelling is better, but Mr. B fills the story with nice details--I wonder if he pays as close attention to the stories he files as a member of the WH press? You know, reporting on the Bush family corporation's charmingly clever shenanigans as regards the government, The Constitution, etc,.

On Sunday, August 13 at 1:00 am
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Godless: The Church of Liberalism
Ann Coulter

Ann Coulter talks about her book, "Godless: The Church of Liberalism." The book proposes that liberalism is a godless religion with a belief system that is in direct opposition to the Judeo-Christian tradition. In making her case, Ms. Coulter writes that liberalism has its own sacraments (abortion), its own clergy (public school teachers), and its own creation myth (evolution). Ms. Coulter answers questions about her book and gives her thoughts on conservative & liberal ideals. This event is hosted by the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute.

Ann Coulter is the author of "How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must),""Treason, " "Slander," and "High Crimes and Misdemeanors," all New York Times bestsellers. She works as the legal correspondent for Human Events and is a syndicated columnist for Universal Press Syndicate. She graduated with honors from Cornell University and received her law degree from the University of Michigan. Upon graduation, she clerked for a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals and practiced law in New York City. She also worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee. Ms. Coulter serves on the National Advisory board of the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute.

Governor Tom Kean: From the New Jersey Statehouse to the 9-11 Commission
Alvin Felzenberg

Alvin Felzenberg discusses his latest book on Gov. Tom Kean's New Jersey governorship and his work on the 9-11 commission. In a presentation about his new book, "Governor Tom Kean," Mr. Felzenberg argues that it is unusual for such a loyal Republican to be so successful as a leader during the time of a Democratic congress and Republican president. Mr. Felzenberg argues that it was Kean's successful bipartisan skills that enabled Gov. Kean to lead the 9-11 commission in spite of deep partisan divisions. He further examines Gov. Kean's successes in redistricting in accordance with the "one man, one vote" principle, his revitalization of urban areas in New Jersey that were destroyed by the 1967 riots, and his leadership in support of the environment, and education in New Jersey. Barnes & Noble in Princeton, NJ hosted this event.

Alvin Felzenberg was the spokesman for the 9-11 Commission and for the 9-11 Public Discourse Project. Recently, he was a fellow at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Mr. Felzenberg has worked on Capitol Hill, served in two presidential administrations, and in the 1980's, was New Jersey's Assistant Secretary of State. His writings have appeared in the Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe, Weekly Standard, and the Christian Science Monitor. Mr. Felzenberg received a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton University and a M.A. and B.A. from Rutgers University.

He discusses the book with Anne Mulkern, National Writer for The Denver Post.

Hooked: Pirates, Poaching, and the Perfect Fish
Bruce Knecht

From the Egan Martime Foundation in Nantucket, Bruce Knecht talks about the popularity and near-extinction of the Chilean Sea Bass (properly known as the Patagonian toothfish). The high demand and price for the toothfish in the United States and elsewhere has attracted poachers who catch the fish in huge quantities. As a result, the population of the toothfish has dropped by over 90 percent since the middle of the last century. During his talk, Mr. Knecht tells the story of the capture of one of these poaching vessels by an Australian government patrol boat, after one of the longest chases in maritime history. He shows video footage of the chase and capture and shares stories about his encounters with the captain of the poaching vessel.

Bruce Knecht writes for the Wall Street Journal and has had his work published in the Atlantic Monthly, Conde Nast Traveler, and the New York Times Magazine. He is the author of "The Proving Ground."

The Detonators: The Secret Plot to Destroy America and an Epic Hunt for Justice
Chad Millman

In "The Detonators," Chad Millman tells the story of a 1916 German terrorist attack in New York that destroyed much of lower Manhattan. German saboteurs bombed an ammunition depot on Black Tom Island -- just south of Manhattan -- to undermine U.S. attempts to assist the British war effort in World War I. Mr. Millman also tells the story of a private lawsuit against Germany to recoup the financial losses caused by the blast. The South Street Seaport Museum hosted this event.

Chad Millman is a former reporter for Sports Illustrated and CNNSI. Currently, he is a senior editor at ESPN Magazine. Mr. Millman is a graduate of Indiana University. Other books he has written include "The Odds: One Season, Three Gamblers, and the Death of Their Las Vegas" and "Pickup Artists: Street Basketball in America."

Benedict Arnold's Navy: The Ragtag Fleet that Lost the Battle of Lake Champlain but Won the American Revolution
James Nelson
direct video link - http://www.booktv.org/History/index.asp?segID=7298&schedID=444

In "Benedict Arnold's Navy," James Nelson strives to characterize Benedict Arnold as more than a traitor. Mr. Nelson traces Arnold's role in the Army during the American Revolution, including Arnold's role in the battles at Ticonderoga and Valcour Island on Lake Champlain. Nelson chronicles the wit with which Benedict conducted his military endeavors and argues that his entire reputation is marred by Arnold's ultimate abandonment of the American army and alliance with the British.

James Nelson is a former sailor and served as an officer on a number of sailing vessels. His writing covers a wide range of America's maritime heritage, from piracy in Colonial Virginia to the naval action of the Civil War. He has authored "By Force of Arms," "The Maddest Idea,"" The Continental Risque,"" Lords of the Ocean," and "All the Brave Fellows" -- the five books of his Revolution at Sea Saga -- as well as "The Guardship: Book One of the Brethren of the Coast."
