John Kerry responds to NBC's Chris Matthews' partisan attack on Michael Moore
by John in DC - 1/19/2006 10:51:00 PM

Kerry just released the following statement. Good for him.

"You'd think the only focus tonight would be on destroying Osama Bin Laden, not comparing him to an American who opposes the war whether you like him or not. You want a real debate that America needs? Here goes: If the administration had done the job right in Tora Bora we might not be having discussions on Hardball about a new Bin Laden tape. How dare Scott McClellan tell America that this Administration puts terrorists out of business when had they put Osama Bin Laden out of business in Afghanistan when our troops wanted to, we wouldn't have to hear this barbarian's voice on tape. That's what we should be talking about in America." -- John Kerry

Along those lines, Dick Cheney said this today:
"It is no accident that we haven't been hit in more than four years."
Oh yeah? It's also no accident that Osama bin Laden hasn't been captured in more than four years.

:sarcasm:

It's not his fault that his best moments don't get on the nightly news.

72. I heard a great comeback, but it's a comeback when someone calls you a
two face. The rebuttal was, "If I were a two face, would I be wearing this one?"

Abraham Lincoln said it.

51. He's my President too! And we've only seen the coming attractions.
This year, the focus needs to be on getting Dems into office. Once we get some power in Congress, I'll bet JK will lead the pack in tarring and feathering (ie: impeachment). We have to concentrate on this years elections, but after that, the gloves will be so off... It makes me smile just to think about it.

JK is no wimp...anyone who has met him can attest to that. There is this undercurrent to the guy: he's very macho, a total "tough guy." Beneath the Senatorial dignity, which he has mastered, he is totally "alpha." He's not somebody to F with. Trust me on that. He might make nice in the political arena, but he's not one to forgive and forget. Okay, I might be outing myself as a total nerd here, but to use Star Trek as an example: JK might look and act like a Vulcan, but he's got strong Klingon instincts.

Anyone who doesn't believe me: just watch and wait.

108. Both CIA people and military people
have conceded that Kerry was correct. At the time of the Tora Bora fight, the major papers covered that they heard OBL' s sattellite phone - they knew he was there - but they used Afghan warlords to block off the passages out towards Pakistan.

Were you there, Shaky?

74. Yeah but everyone knows
Scarborough is a partisan hack. Matthews is supposed to be non-partisan. NBC uses him on their main news broadcasts for analysis. SNL parodies him. Matthews is a much bigger hit than Scarborough is.

And the fact that what Matthews said paints anti-war lefties in such a light that ties them to the terrorists, that is as bad as the whole "unpatriotic" shit the Republicans were pulling off before. If we don't beat down those labels now we're doomed to be called that to the point of brainwashing to moderates and independents where they vote against us fearing we have no spine.

This sort of attack needed squashing quickly and Matthews was a big enough mark to take the punch.

144. You are exactly right
If you watched Matthews tonight you would have seem he has a new feature called Hotshots. It is Scarbourough, Rita Cosby and Tucker Carlson. They have several minutes to beat up on democrats. It is just disgusting. I have written MSNBC and Matthews that they have just lost me. Mathews is now Fox lite.

The other night he had Sen. Deiers as his last guest. He did nothing but beat up on liberals. I guess Matthews has finally shown his true colors.

I am really disheartened.

44. Thank you, Senator Kerry!
He's right. Nobody seems to be talking about WHY Bin Laden is still on the loose. Good old Osama always seems to turn up when Bsh is in trouble. Notice that? Just before the election, remember? This guy seems to be Bsh's best friend. No wonder why they haven't really tried to capture him. He's far too useful to the administration. Heck, if the Boogyman was caught, what then would Shrub have to scare us with?

With a 6' tall Saudi running around the Hindu Kush Mts. in need of kidney dialysis equipment, you'd think an RFID of some sort would have made its way there...but no. They can track your purchase of underware from Wal-Mart however.

And this latest tape. Doesn't it seem WEIRD that OBL always pops up with at tape or something right when W needs help in the polls ? Just pointing out the obvious.

Their so-called "failure" to capture him speaks volumes... plainly they don't want to and have avoided succeeding whenever or wherever needed.

If they actually caught Ben Laden, he might actually testify against them... after all, do you really think OBL really carried out 9/11 on his own (if he or any islamoterrorists were actually involved)? Even before 9/11, what sorts of offers was Bush making to the Taliban/OBL in order to sweeten the deal for the proposed oil pipeline to be built across Afghanistan?

If the U.S. is ultimately leaving Iraq, why is the military building 'permanent' bases?
http://www.fcnl.org/iraq/bases.htm

If, as the administration says, we'll stand down as Iraqis stand up...

Then why the lie about withdrawal and why the swift-boating of Murtha ? Bush is deliberately following this policy line and lying about it. The Quakers have 'called' him on it with this weblink and as a result they've ended up being spied upon by the NSA. Retaliation. Domestic spying on your supposed political 'enemies' who are in reality offering up legitimate criticism.

59. Kerry's been consistent on Bush dropping the Osama ball
Kerry has consistently said that the Bush administration dropped the ball with capturing Osama bin Laden. A couple of weeks ago I posted that Gary Berntsen’s new book, “Jawbreaker” backs up what Kerry has been saying all along -

http://blog.thedemocraticdaily.com/?p=1547

Here’s a quote from the recent discussion on this issue Kerry had in an interview with Don Imus, on Imus in the Morning:

KERRY: We had Osama bin Laden trapped in the mountains of Tora Bora . But the president and Donald Rumsfeld decided not to use Americans, the best fighting in the world — we have SEALS on the ground there. I’ve talked to some of them.

They wanted to go up after Osama bin Laden. And the orders were never given to bring in the 82nd Airborne or the Marines, or others, surround that mountain, do anything necessary. We outsourced that job to Afghans, who went up in the hills and Osama bin Laden escaped.

Think the Clinton Administration could have used that? al-Qaeda hit us in 1993 and not again until 2001 (on US soil). Since they are hitting us pretty hard in Iraq right now and I would say doing as much or more damage than the Cole attack or the embassy attacks, that puts Clinton ahead of Bush on how long we stopped Bin Laden.

Granted it was the first Bush who created this mess when he pissed them off by marching our troops onto their holy ground during the Gulf War, but I digress..

Thank god Kerry is standing up for Michael Moore. Joe Biden was a coward last night for not standing up to that sort of bullshit commentary by Matthews. Matthews is such a gutless puke these days to even say those kinds of slanderous remarks is ridiculous. Moore should get a lawyer and sue that asshole.

102. Kerry should have made his case this forcefully during debates
when the media couldn't cut away or distort him--at least those watching would have gotten an accurate picture and been able to see the distortion of what he said that followed.

Instead, while clearly being more coherent and knowledgable than Bush, he treated the Texas Tard with the same deference the wife of a wife-beater gives her husband; the meek smile, the gentle correction, but letting the sociopath essentially rage unchecked. His demeanor fit the effeminate stereotype the GOP tars the Democrats with.

I have a hard time picturing Howard Dean turning in the same performance, even if the words were exactly the same.

didn't care to discuss it.

For the record, Dean spoke about Tora Bora on July 2002 Meet the Press and sided with Bush over Kerry then.

Dean would have gotten slaughtered on Tora Bora when it came up. And he would be one of the first to admit it, today.

143. Kerry said many good things (sometimes buried in crap) but his demeanor
was far too polite and deferential to appeal to the average joe.

Apart from the religious right (and maybe even them too) what people like about Bush is that he always seems vaguely rude and that he is at best tolerating the presence of others.

I don't want a candidate who goes that far, but he should be unapologetic, direct, concise, and forceful in his one chance at speaking to America unfiltered and unedited.

If Kerry runs again, which I would have mixed feelings about at best, he needs to be less long-winded when answering questions, drop the DLC, Shrumian platitudes and replace them with in your face memorable phrasing that underlines the difference with the GOP, and say everything like you are throwing down a gauntlet, not suggesting a better way to make fluffy pie crusts.

Probably the singlest biggest mistake of the Shrum way is thinking you can win by being inoffensive and mouthing platitudes. That approach assumes people are listening to you. They aren't. You need to give someone a reason to listen and make it sound like you are saying somethng new and revolutionary even if it's been around since FDR.

We must give our props to the GOP on the one thing they know how to do--communicate. Even if it is the moral equivalent of putting make up on a barnyard pig and calling it a prom queen.

We can learn from the GOP, be provocative, but stay within the ethical lines and win.

It seems like the only reason we aren't doing so is the party leadership is either courting or afraid of the GOP's corporate power base.

110. How do we know this message is from OBL?
Because the CIA(WMD'S?) sez so? Peculiar timing. Just when the monkey is about to get his feet held to the fire for wiretapping and abramoff this comes out. Sound familar? Red alert! Bullshit coming!

131. What could have possessed tweety to compare a left of center guy
who did a movie that exposed the bs premises under which we went to war with iraq, which all turned out to be true, with OBL? At what point did he given in to being a rw talking point zombie?

132. Sybil just switched personalities, that's all
A snap of the fingers, and he's Right Wing Zombie. The next minute, he's Bush's Fan Boy, oggling the codpiece. Sometimes he The Church Lady, calling people Satan all over the place. And every once in a while he remembers that he used to be Tip O'Neill's staffer, and you hear echos of the Dem he was.

133. If they had prevented one attack...ONE STINKING ATTACK...
THEY WOULD HAVE TROTTED THE TERRORISTS OUT IN PUBLIC TO SAY, "YEAH, LOOK AT US NOW! LOOK AT HOW WE PREVENTED ANOTHER TERROR ATTACK!" THIS ADMINISTRATION HASN'T PREVENTED ONE DAMN THING EXCEPT TELLING THE PRESS HOW MANY TIMES BUSH MET WITH ABRAMOFF.

FUCK YOU CHENEY!

134. I was so pissed at Matthews...
that I sent the following email to Hardball

Dear Hardball,

Apparently Mr. Matthews has forever crossed the line from Journalist to Right Wing political tool.

Where's the objective commentary in alluding to Michael More and Osama Bin Laden as like minded.
Did Michael More kill 3000 innocent Americans? Does Michael More want to destroy our democracy?
Uh, No! He has every right to express his views (read the constitution, it's in there) without being labeled
as a traitor. His right to express his views has been paid for by the blood of many soldiers throughout history.
Our President and Vice President however, cowardly fled from their obligation to fight for their country in Viet Nam!

Get OFF the air! Hardly anyone watches your sorry show anymore!
I gave up watching during the 2000 election when Mr. Matthews' constant Clinton and Gore bashing
was just too nauseating to stomach.

Mr. Matthews might as well just come out and say ...

"I love George W. Bush. I think everything he does has a 'sunny nobility' and I will always support
him and undermine his opposition."

Pathetic! Go to Fox where you belong.

140. The Big Difference between
Michael Moore and tweety matthews is..Michael Moore loves his country and tweety could give a shit or not..

It's all about putting that digit in the wind and seeing which way it's blowin' for tweets.

So glad to see that John Kerry is speaking up for Michael Moore, although, I don't see those particular words in Kerry's statement..I guess you had to hear the original words by bird head.

146. Turned Off MSNBC For Good, Days Back
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 09:01 PM by AuntiBush
When Tweety spoke of Republicans like they could do no wrong, and slammed Democrats.

Facist, that was it for me. Sorry Keith.

149. Haven't watched it (but by accident) in years!
It wouldn't kill me to watch the equivalent of a glass of warm milk, but I'm too busy being informed. :-)

As for Kerry's defense of Moore: yes, good for him. I'd written off John Kerry after his pro-corporate, pro-war campaign, but if he wants to be taken seriously all he needs do is fight. This isn't a bad start.

150. What happens....
when we are hit again?

Can we FINALLY blame these Nazi wannabes? Seriously. They fucked up royally on 9/11. They only have one job to do: protect this nation. They had memos telling them attacks were coming really really soon. They did NOTHING. Didn't even bother to look into it. For that alone they should be impeached.
