Hezbollah 'will respect ceasefire' as Israel triples Lebanon troops

By Agence France Presse (AFP)

by Jihad Siqlawi

TYRE, Lebanon, Aug 12, 2006 (AFP) - Hezbollah said Saturday it would respect a ceasefire as Israel poured thousands more troops into an open-ended offensive on Lebanon, despite a unanimous UN Security Council call for an end to the month-old war.

<snip>

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said the UN resolution was not fair, but that the Shiite movement would not stand in the way of its approval.

"We will not be an obstacle to any decision taken by the Lebanese government. Our government ministers will register reservations on the resolution and some of its terms," he said on Hezbollah's Al-Manar television.

<snip>

"If there is an agreement over a ceasefire through UN chief Kofi Annan or an agreement between Lebanon and Israel ... the resistance will abide," Nasrallah said.

1. Headline kind of has a certain ring to it. If anyone has a sense of irony
or a high sense of hypocratic outrage.

am getting rather tired of all this, you know? Friend asked by we heard so little on, oh lord can't remember the issue even. Had to point out the layering right now of coverage on Terror!, Israel/Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, voting, etc etc etc.

4. But will continue to fight as long as an Israeli is on lebanon soil
It doesn't sound much like a cease fire on either side.

5. If you're fighting off an invading force, do you stop fighting while
they're still pushing further into your territory? That doesn't seem like a reasonable demand -- are the defenders supposed to just stand still and be shot?

Israel isn't interested in any ceasefire until it's decided it's bloodied enough Hizbullah nose to salvage some pathetic sense of pride in having committed this bloody folly in the first place.
