'Green Helmet' is not Hezbollah! He helps rescue the wounded in Lebanon
Edited on Sat Aug-12-06 03:16 PM by leftchick
Sorry freeps and freaks! He is not a member of Hezbollah like all of the keyboard commandos have been crying about since the Qana massacre.....

Head of Operations for the Lebanese Civil Defense in Tyre, Salam Daher, 39, sits to be photographed in the town of Tyre in southern Lebanon Friday, Aug. 11, 2006. Salam Daher's green-helmeted head digging beneath bombed out buildings to retrieve the dead has been seen in news photographs from two wars, in 1996 and again in 2006, both times after Israeli bombings in the village of Qana. (AP Photo/Ben Curtis)

<snip>

TYRE, Lebanon - After hours of digging in the blistering heat, Salam Daher emerged from the wreckage with the body of a 9-month-old baby, a blue pacifier still pinned to its nightshirt.

He held the infant up and, click, an Associated Press photographer snapped another picture of Daher, in his trademark green helmet, displaying a civilian victim of Israeli bombs for the world to see.

Daher, a member of the civil defense for 20 years, has been photographed with bodies of the dead in two wars now — first in 1996 and most recently with the baby on July 30 __ both times after Israeli attacks in the village of Qana six miles southeast of the city.

For that reason, some Web sites have labeled him the "Green Helmet," and accused him of being a member of the Hezbollah guerrilla group, and of showing off bodies as propaganda.

"But that isn't true," he told The Associated Press. He is not affiliated with any party, he said. "I am just a civil defense worker. I have done this job all my life."

18. Yeah, the pro-Israeli war crimes megaphonies are beyond help.
The only thing that can be done is to marginalize them, and they do most of that with thier own words.

3. this part is important...
<snip>

After hours of digging, Daher emerged with the youngest victim. In a parched voice, he shouted something in Arabic and held the child up for the photographer.

To many in the West, such photographs are surprising; but they are not unusual in the Middle East, where grief and drama are often intertwined, and that can include displaying of bodies.

Bloggers have accused rescue workers and volunteers of showing off victims for the media. The Lebanese make no apologies for wanting the world to see the civilian suffering in the Israeli onslaught aimed at uprooting Hezbollah.

15. Many of the victims have been Christian....
And I have met many very light skinned Lebanese.

I guess the MSM just doesn't show any of them... :(

16. They aren't thinking. Constantly rehashing and tearing our hair over 9-11
...is more of a help to the enemy. 5 years on and we're still inundated with constant reminders of that tragedy by our news and government (for political purposes, but it still keeps it fresh). This can only please terrorists and make them more determined to wound us again in a similar way.

6. But is that something Israel wants people doing?

If they want anybody to help the people they have just bombed they would send in their own doctors etc, they have lots of people who are trained to do that. And so does America, and we are the ones paying for the bombs. So doing something like he is doing without special permission or something from Israel would still be considered to be helping enemies and they might bomb him too like they did those other people who were trying to take aid to Lebanese people.

22. They came up with a name for him before this article.
And a profession, something like 'travelling mortician.'

But as is my usual want, I have no problem assuming that compatible or non-excusive attributes can occur.

Now, 'rescue worker' isn't probably a full time job. If there's a place where it could be, it's Lebanon, but pickings were a bit slim the previous 6 years. So I'm guessing he has another job.

As for Hezb or not ... we keep hearing that everybody's Hezb. One article told about five fighters that were in a field, wounded, but when medics showed up they had transformed into civilians. The transformation sounded like more than it was: it was simply a speech act. Same clothes, same people, same everything.

Is he Hezb? Is he a supporter? Is he a professional mourner, or does he simply cater to the photographers? Dunno.

Don't care. The difference is unimportant, one of labels. Rather like "Green Helmete" or "Blue Helmet".

20. OH man...and the other day I saw an IDF soldier wearing the American
flag. So should I start calling him, 'Flag Helmet Guy'? IMO, people always assume the worst if it makes them scared. Poor guy.
