On CSPAN2 now! 11:30 pm - Kingdom Coming:The Rise of Christian Nationalism
Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism
Michelle Goldberg

Michelle Goldberg appears at the All Souls Unitarian Church in Indianpolis, Indiana to discuss her book about religious conservatives. The author argues that many conservative religious leaders and organizations are working to make the United States an overtly Christian nation with Christian laws. She describes how the Bush administration's faith based initiative has changed public health policy and transformed organizations like the Salvation Army. Following her remarks she takes questions from the audience.

Michelle Goldberg is a senior writer for Salon.com and a member of the advisory board of the Campaign to Defend the Constitution (www.defconamerica.org ). She has written for the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Rolling Stone, and Newsday. "Kingdom Coming" is her first book.

"When facism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”

7. I believe that quote was actually by Huey Long,
and the part about "carrying a cross" was tacked on by someone unknown.

8. gutting the Salvation Army
long time social service employees leaving because of the new Faith Based programs. This is a travesty. I attended SA as a teen, and my Mom worked the front desk. I felt so comfortable there, as opposed to every other church I've ever attended. We had old ladies in the front, families sitting in the middle, all the teens usually sitting together (the youth group was so fun... religion was almost never discussed), and usually a bum or two dozing in the back pews. I never felt pressured to conform or made to feel 'less than'.

I don't think I would feel comfortable there at all now. :(

And the resentment is surfacing in surprising ways.

the demise of the Christian Right and they always come back, stronger than ever."

11. the point that resonates
Edited on Sat Aug-12-06 11:45 PM by burythehatchet
most with me is the concept that the war/struggle in which humanity is engaged is not East/West, North/South, or Muslim/Christian. Rather, its about Fundamentalism and Secularism. I often say that that which helps Bush also helps Bin Laden, and that which disempowers one disempowers the other. Their fortunes are tied. It is because their interests are perfectly aligned. The tragedy we are enduring right now is a failure to recognize the true dichotomy. The charade many people have been sold makes very fuzzy the true demarkation line, thereby causing the emotions and efforts of those people to be misdirected.

Plus the author is hot!:)

12. that's the "culture war"
Bible fascists who want control and conforming and secular liberals who don't need to make everyone like themselves. Bullies VS non Bullies.

17. Interesting
In a post below, you wrote:

"They need to be shamed back into thier hidey holes."

That sounds exactly like bullying, control, conforming, and making everyone like yourself.

27. So that makes the tolerant intolerant
which means nothing will ever stop. Which is fine, since that's how I see life anyway. The same problems are always around, only changing shape after we solve them. As long as the double-standard is out in the open, that's all I ask. We all have our own double or triple standards anyway.

13. For many years the Fundies were either ignored or made fun of.
That of course was a big mistake that must be corrected. Fundies of any stripe do not believe in democracy. They believe in Dictatorship of their religious bent. This is one of the reasons that Busholini has a strong 29% support base. The Fundies made great gains during Raygun's Admin. and he catered to them as does Busholini. We must do whatever we can to keep our Nation from becoming a RW Theocratic Fascist State that it is rapidly becoming.

secularism which have sought to deny America's Godly heritage and undermine her God-given potential.
