Brokeback Mountain #1 across America
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 12:28 AM by Quixote1818
Jumping off a big win at the kudofest Monday and helped by an otherwise weak field, "Brokeback Mountain" garnered the impressive achievement of a solid No. 1 win at the box office Tuesday and Wednesday despite playing just 682 theaters. With about $740,000 both days, Focus' cowboy love story beat "Glory Road," which was on 2,222 playdates, by approximately $50,000 Tuesday and $100,000 Wednesday.

That puts "Brokeback" in a very strong position as it expands this weekend to 1,194 playdates -- a significant boost from the 800-900 Focus was planning before the Globes victories.

Also bowing, and considered a lock for the top weekend spot, is Sony Screen GemsScreen Gems' "Underworld: Evolution." Indie distribdistrib Rocky Mountain Films will be aiming for a Christian niche with "End of the Spear," while New Line puts Terence Malick's "The New World" in a small wide run and Warner Independent debuts Albert Brooks' comedy "Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World" in limited release.

Focus has been regularly expanding "Brokeback" by 100-200 playdates per week for the past few weeks, but decided to take advantage of excitement among exhibs and the public after the Globes.

1. Falwell/Robertson/Rove, et al
are in religious shock. It may signal to them that their theocratic move to take over the government and discriminate against gays won't work. The people aren't with them.

3. I thought this was a great movie with a moving story. Very good
acting and cinematography. I am very impressed (surprised?) by the number of movies out lately that have intelligent, compelling stories and wonderful acting. I think Capote, Crash, Constant Gardener and Syriana are all movies that respect the demand the attention of the audience and actually provoke THINKING. I applaud these studio's for producing these films and not relying on the same old eye candy and violence.

6.  i thought it was excllent..
i saw Capote and Syriana which i thought was really good. I have't been able to bring myself to see Constant Gardner, because i have the sense that i will find it depressing and sad. I haven't seen Crash, i hear it's surprisingly good.

4. "Underworld" will be #1 over the weekend, but "Brokeback" will be #2
It's been #1 all this week, so word of mouth is hot hot hot, and the Golden Globe win will give it extra credibility. Sure, a bunch of no-brainers will go see "Underworld," but I'll bet its per-screen average gross will be about 1/2 of "Brokeback's," which is playing on considerably fewer screens.
