A U.N.-brokered ceasefire to end the month-long war between Israel and Hizbollah guerrillas formally took effect at 0500 GMT on Monday, but no immediate confirmation was available that it was being observed.

Israel launched new air strikes on Lebanon just before the truce deadline, Lebanese security sources said. Earlier, Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported on its Web site Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had told his army to observe a truce from 2 a.m. on Monday (2300 GMT Sunday) and to start withdrawing some of its estimated 30,000 troops in south Lebanon.

But Israeli air strikes went on well after that time, targeting areas in eastern Lebanon and near the southern city of Sidon, the security sources said. Fierce clashes between Israeli troops and Hizbollah were also reported early on Monday.

Air strikes on the village of Brital near Lebanon's eastern border with Syria overnight killed at least nine civilians, medics said. One person was killed in a strike on a Palestinian refugee camp, the security sources said....(more@link)

5. Why am I skeptical they'll still be "ceasing" fire two days from now?
Another term for this cease fire is "taking a breather, grab some soup and fourty winks, then come back refreshed for the next round of swapping aluminum."

I shouldn't be so cynical. But I'm blaming society.

8. Israel to maintain Lebanon blockade - source
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L14107007.htm
Israeli forces will maintain their air and sea blockade on Lebanon despite the start of a ceasefire with Hizbollah guerrillas on Monday, a military source said.

"The air and sea closure will continue until a mechanism is in place to oversee and stop weapons smuggling," the source said.

Kind of like taunting. Like Dr Evil saying "nextime" while shaking his fist. Or was that on Inspector Gadget Nextime Gadget, Nextime.

14. Text of leaflets:
In a parting propaganda shot, Israel promised more of the same if Hezbolah continues to operate from southern Lebanon.

"Hezbollah, with it isolationist, reckless and deceitful policies has brought you many achievements: destruction, displacement, and death," the leaflets dropped over Beirut said.

"Can you pay this price again?

"Know that the Israel Defense Forces will return and will act with all necessary might against any terrorist act coming from Lebanon that touches Israel."

Sounds reasonable to me...

16. Reasonable for what its worth
You smash a countries infrastructure and promise more of same if someone pisse you off.

There is some soul searching already going on. Olmert is getting a lot of criticism and there is criticism on the other side as well.
I would think the people on either side would have to know that this warring in not something that they want to live with.

12. Cease-fires are merely chances to resupply your forces and reposition them
Then you are off again to do battle. At least, that's the cynical way to view it. Let's hope that's not the case.

17. Guardian-no outright fighting, but an incident anyways.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,,1844240,00.html
...However, the truce's fragile nature was underlined when the Israeli military reported shooting a man they described as a Hizbullah guerrilla in the town of Hadatha, around a mile north of the Israeli border, today.

They said the man had been part of a group approaching an Israeli outpost "in a threatening way", and was only a few metres away when troops opened fire.

"The unit was under threat, so they fired in self-defence," an army statement said. "But the armed men didn't open fire first."...

So far reporting only 1 person shot during cease fire. Are Lebanese more trusting than I? I would not return home yet. Hoping for peace.
