1. yes many things are still made in the USA!
Yesterday I was shopping at KMART and every item I bought was MADE IN THE USA! I go out of my way to buy as many Made in the USA products as I can.

:D

10. "Made in USA" doesn't necessarily mean Union made, also.
A pretty large swath of this country has "Right to Work" laws, so that many plants, factories, offices don't have benefit of union representation. But hell, they can still slap "Made in USA" labels on what they produce.

2. I deal with automation
equipment. Cutting turning gear. There are plenty of shops that make everything from fire suppression to warships that are union. Cummins is a union shop (I think). Plenty of complex items that require skilled labor is union.

Making shitty coffee makers is not the same as making PET Scanners, jet engines, and nuclear reactors.

The Electric Boat Company comes to mind as well.

made jeans company. I'll look and get back it successful. it was in response to a question I asked here a week or so ago.

4. Well, even if it says 'Made in the USA', it isn't necessarily true.
As we learned from DeLay and Co., there are islands in the Pacific that are US territories (Saipan and the rest of the Northern Marianas, to be specific) and therefore entitled to put 'Made in the USA' on their manufactured goods, despite the fact that these goods are manufactured by imported Philippino/a and other Asian workers under sweatshop conditions. So when you see that 'Made in the USA' label, it might be worth checking which USA they mean.

7. The Great Union Misinformation Campaign
First, let me set the record straight by saying I am firmly a Labor Union supporter, but not a member of any.
But what amazes me to this day is working people, be them blue-collar or others, parroting the Great Republican lie that Unions are bad for the country.
This misinformation campaign, which has been in full gear for decades, has been enormously effective.
Now in 2006 America, we have little wage escalation for hourly workers with professional workers sucked into the 50+hour work week under the myth of productivity.
Vacations are few and far between - indeed many workers are so immersed in the work culture (or too broke) that they don't even take the vacations that they did earn!
Unions brought the U.S. safe working conditions, a 40 hour work week, benefits, vacations, paid time off, and pensions. They also brought America a world-class work force when America commanded respect for the goods produced here.
Now we have deteriorating working conditions, a 50+ hour work week, reduced benefits at best, no vacations, and greatly diminished pensions.
Progress is record corporate profits, no innovation in manufacturing, and a "global" economy (good for the U.S. when we get to exploit poorer nations for their workforce).
I'm in management. I would prefer a union workforce: Proud, competent, and enjoying a fair share of the pie.
Of course, we couldn't compete like that in the current economy.

9. Do you think the business climate would be more receptive to
Union organizing and the return of Unions if Unions had more ownership in the businesses, i.e. blocks of stock to vote, profit sharing etc.

I'm not sure how different this would be from the stake Unions traditionally had in the welfare of the businesses they worked for, but I was wondering if it would help others to trust them more.

22. I think the Corporate goal has been achieved
...and that was to ruin the labor movement.
I don't think for a minute that corporate America would entertain any objective that would cut into their profits (even short-term) and their absolute control of employees.
I also believe that that philosophy is short-sighted. In many cases, unions would help productivity and efficiency.
Unfortunately, the model most feared in the auto industry. No, it wasn't the lack of innovation, poor quality, and an absolute disregard for the market demand that hurt the auto industry, it was the unions!

16. CATERPILLAR!
My dad was a proud mechanic at a Catapillar dealer. He was struck ill when I was a sophomore in HS. His union benefits meant we got to keep the house.

ALWAYS support unions. It is the only chance a regular guy (or gal) has.
