The proposed Iranian oil bourse
Bush's Shock-and-Awe in Iraq was not about Saddam's nuclear capabilities, about defending human rights, about spreading democracy, or even about seizing oil fields; it was about defending the dollar, ergo the American Empire. It was about setting an example that anyone who demanded payment in currencies other than U.S. Dollars would be likewise punished.

1. Great Article!
Recommended reading as it lends an altogether different perspective and points to the rational to do to Iran what we did to Iraq.

2. Iran moving assets out of Europe

'TEHRAN (Reuters) - Embroiled in a nuclear standoff with the West, Iran said on Friday it was moving its foreign assets to shield them from possible U.N. sanctions and flexed its oil muscles with a proposal to cut OPEC output.

"Yes, Iran has started withdrawing money from European banks and transferring it to other banks abroad," said a senior Iranian official, who asked not to be named."

3. You can't just print dollars to buy millions of barrels of oil
without massive inflation. We consume almost 4 bbl annually. At $65 per, you'd have to print $260 billion extra just to buy imported oil. That's a pretty big increase in the H6 figures in any given year.

Plus you lose the financial benefits of military force, i.e., Halliburton paying off the 100,000+ asbestos claims it inherited when it purchased Dresser, the increased oil profits, the consulting, TV and other contracts enriching the Empire's faithful intelligensia and so on.

And you can't buy oil no one will sell to you. That's why it's better to control the oil than buy it. By invading Iraq, the US now controls as many oil reserves as any country in the world.

Oil is the key and it has been so since the middle of WW II when the Germans ran out of it.

14. Yes, you can.
Here's what "they" are up to: since oil can only be bought in dollars, when the price of oil goes up, people have to get more dollars to buy oil with. There has to be "cash" for them to make their transactions. So when the price of oil goes up, they print more money, because the extra demand for dollars (and the decision not to publish the M3 statistic) will hide the fact that they have printed more money. The dollar doesn't inflate because there is a short-term demand to keep it high.

So in actual fact, the dollar is already being inflated, just the effects of that are postponed. One can speculate that their objective is to stiff the people we owe money to, but then we have to get into the question of who wins if they let the dollar tank later on (in a year or two) as opposed to this summer. In any case, a euro-denominated oil trading center might be somewhat disruptive to that plan (or, depending on who "they" are and what "they" want, might be exactly according to plan.)

6. This is amazing
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 08:47 PM by thefool_wa
I have been reading about this idea all week and it is amazing to me that this is not hitting the MSM. I know that there is a large portion of our populace that doesn't understand the intricacies of macro-economics (or even the basics for that matter), but this whole idea actually has me kinda (and only kinda) back on the fence over the whole war issue.

Though, I still think that devoting our time and money to finding alternative fuel sources or creating alternative transportation solutions is still the best answer to it all. We need to fold up our tents (literally), abandon this pointless war, and force feed the american public an alternative to fossil fuels. We need to dismantle the corrupt oil industry and tell them that we no longer want their poisonous fuels, that we as a people are unified in getting rid of our gas-guzzling cars and WANT things to be different.

I know that the rest of the US isn't behind this idea, people love their cars and even need them, but we need to start looking at the cost in environmental destruction, world opinion of America (and typically I don't care what other nations think, but...), and the staggering loss of human life and question whether it is really worth it.

We have to so something or it is all going to fall apart and everyone will have nothing. Is that what we really want?

16. Vague.

If you want to get past "we" need to "do something" I'd reccommend participating in the ongoing energy platform development at dkos:
