A fairly logical explanation for the Allen slur...
George Allen called an American of Indian decent "Makaka". Which we have since found out means monkey in many different areas of the world. One of them being the region in which Allen's mother is from.

Now is it possible, that having forgotten the Webb campaigner's name, Allen filled in with a word that he subconsciously remembers from his childhood that his mother may have uttered with regards to people who are not white?

To me, that seems like what happened here. However, it was the ridiculing of this American born person as not American that doomed Allen. Even if the explanation I give above is true it shows:

1. A background of racism.
2. An assumption that a person who is not white is not an American or a Virginian.

1. For sure, he meant to mock that person as a dark-skinned foreigner.
We may never know exactly what he thought "Macaca" meant, but what matters is his clear racist intentions.

3. Insult and then apologize
with a wink and a nod to his racist supporters.
He knew and his supporters all laughed, they know his apology is not sincere.

6. Why make excuses?
Allen is a racist and he meant what he said. The man plastered his school with confederate flags when he was a teen.

7. I can see that too.
But, that is not the way I saw it. He knew he was on video and he is running for Senate, I don't think he would have done that on purpose.

8. Of course it wasn't on purpose these Idiots don't think well on their feet
and he felt comfortable enough with the crowd. So he made the biggest mistake a true Republican could make and he said the 1st thing that came to his raciest little mind. If he said lets all welcome this young man and treat him as our equal, that would have been on purpose. But that might have made the heads explode of the true believers in the crowd.

as in "My esteemed colleague from the other side of the aisle, the honorable Senator Buttf*ck ..."

Rats, I should have said Santorum ...

15. George Allen is a known racist
He wore a Confederate flag lapel pin on his high school photo, had Confederate flags hanging in his dorm room and bumper stickers on his car, and reportedly had a noose in his law office.

16. Occam's Razor says . . .
The simplest explanation will usually suffice. The proffered explanation seems strained beyond reason, particularly since Mr. Allen used the word twice, and therefore is not credible.

Much easier to believe that his racism bubbled up and spilled out before he was quite aware that his epithet is not used on polite circles (though it is fairly common on racist bulletin boards and websites, as detailed in a Daily Kos diary).
