omg - the new, limited edition 9*11 commemorative coin - made w/wtc steel
Edited on Tue Aug-15-06 12:51 PM by Skip Intro
The "Twin Towers!" - "9*11!" - "God!" - this one's got it all! And it pops up!

Is this over the top or what?

http://www.nationalcollectorsmint.com/category_landing.jsp?path=-1&id=4688&promotion=web-wtc&ext=y

It's truly unique, created using two distinct struck pieces. First, the base is struck with gleaming buildings on a frosted background. Then the inset of the Twin Towers is magnificently engraved and fitted into the skyline on the face of the commemorative with jeweler precision, able to rise up into a breathtaking standing sculpture. The effect is dazzling - it is literally transformed into a standing sculpture of the Twin Towers!

The World Trade Center skyline is lavishly clad in gleaming silver miraculously recovered from a bank vault found under tons of debris at Ground Zero. To mark the fifth anniversary, $5 of every 2001-2006 World Trade Center Commemorative order is donated to official 9/11 family charities and memorials. The stunning design of this magnificent September 11th memorial is a 15 mg. of 24 KT gold and 15 mg. of .999 Pure silver clad tribute to all who were lost on that fateful day.

On the obverse, the luminous New York City skyline featuring the magnificent Twin Towers gleams against a frosted background, much as they shimmered in the sunlight that fateful September morning. On the reverse, a powerful eagle, 5 stars to denote the fifth anniversary and the plea, “God Bless America.” These commemoratives may well be among the most historically meaningful collectibles you will ever own.

Can you say scam? The coin is worthless.

Can you imagine some uber-patriot Repuke schmuck sitting around all day playing with his 'flip up' coin? Unfortunately I can.

7. Now THAT is vulgar.
Fetishistic, almost. It's like a throwback to pre-Enlightenment sacred relics; all you need is a chip of bone from a dead firefighter embedded in it, and you're safe to fly while it wards off evil.

8. I thought Elliot Spitzer shut these ghouls down?
That coin is ghastly, although I can see why conservatives might enjoy being able to raise and knock down the towers whenever the mood strikes them.

25. Here are some articles from Spitzer's case - it's the same MO as last time
"Spitzer halts sale of 9/11 coins he calls fraud. Company claims products made of silver recovered at ground zero"

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6239155/

and then when he won the case...

"Firm Told to Stop Making Claims About 9/11 Coins"

http://www.directmag.com/news/stop-claims-911-coins/index.html

What is it with coin fraud and the GOP? Didn't they learn anything from the Ney scandal in Ohio?

9. Another "medal" for the chickenhawks
I must say I have my share of coins, many given to me by Admirals and Commanding Officers of commands I served for or with; many I collected on deployments, especially those I traded with members of the Army, Air Force and Marines when I was on deployment. They are valued tokens for members of the armed services and I have them proudly displayed in my office. The one listed in this thread is for chickenhawks so they can brag about their "medals."

24. Not Yet
The event will be held Friday 15 September. A bit of trivia (the last military day of pay for FY 2006.) I am really looking forward to it. Oddly enough, relative to this post, I got the new Chief a beautiful CPO coin. No doubt he will get an "official" coin from his Chief's Mess but I got him a little different one to extend his collection. Thanks for asking. Have you ordered any Cafe Du Monde products yet? MMM, MMM Good! Ya gotta take a recommendation on coffee from a retired chief.

27. My pleasure to share that info with you
Check on:

http://www.nomenu.com/RestaurantsOpen.html#Metairie

It lists all the restaurants in and around New Orleans which are open. I'm happy to report to you that Morning Call in Metarie is open. I've never been there but it has a good reputation. November is a good time to come to NOLA. Low tourist season, however that hasn't been much of problem this year. You can get lots of Christmas shopping done.

10. So, is China selling pieces of the WTC back to us in these coins?
I hate all 9-11 "commemoratives".
My company (silversmith) was asked to do a 9-11 commemorative piece and my boss said NO!
Instead we made an American flag with a heart cutout in it.
He was totally against using any 9-11 imagery.

12. Yes, America leads the world in good taste.
A pop-up WTC coin: truly a work of demented genius. At least they didn't make one with a little tab that lets you slide the buildings up and down, reenacting the collapse.

I love the line, "These commemoratives may well be among the most historically meaningful collectibles you will ever own." Sounds like they're not even sure about that one themselves. They MAY indeed be AMONG the most meaningful collectibles you'll own...if you live in a trailer and get all your antiques free with Happy Meals.

What a tasteless piece of crap.

Saw it on the TV
Bought it on the phone
When I got it home

22. It sounds like an old-fashioned Irwin Mainway commercial
I saw that commercial the other day and the first thing that popped in my head was Dan Aykroyd's Irwin Mainway character. It just sounded so sleazy.

Consumer Probe

Consumer Reporter.....Candice Bergen
Irwin Mainway.....Dan Aykroyd

Consumer Reporter: Good evening, and welcome to the holiday edition of "Consumer Probe". Our topic tonight is unsafe toys for children. For instance, this little bow and arrow set. < holds up > Pull the rubber suctions off, and the arrows become deadly missiles.

< cut to full shot, showing Irwin Mainway seated to Joan's right >

We have with us tonight, Mr. Irwin Mainway, President of Mainway Toys. Uh, Mr. Mainway, your company manufactures the following so-called harmless playthings: Pretty Peggy Ear-Piercing Set, Mr. Skin-Grafter, General Tron's Secret Police Confession Kit, and Doggie Dentist. And what about this innocent rubber doll, which you market under the name Johnny Switchblade? < holds up doll > Press his head, and two sharp knives spring from his arms. < demonstrates > Mr. Mainway, I'm afraid this is, by no means, a very safe toy.

Irwin Mainway: Okay, Miss, I wanna correct you, alright. The full name of this product, as it appears in stores all over the county, is Johnny Switchblade: Adventure Punk. I mean, nothing goes wrong.. little girls buy 'em, you know, they play games, they make up stories, nobody gets hurt. I mean, so Barbie takes a knife once in a while, or Ken gets cut. You know, there's no harm in that. I mean, as far as I can see, you know?

Consumer Reporter: Alright. Fine. Fine. Well, we'd like to show you another one of Mr. Mainway's products. It retails for $1.98, and it's called Bag O' Glass. < holds up bag of glass > Mr. Mainway, this is simply a bag of jagged, dangerous, glass bits.

Irwin Mainway: Yeah, right, it's you know, it's glass, it's broken glass, you know? It sells very well, as a matter of fact, you know? It's just broken glass, you know?

US warship built from 9/11 steel

Commander Chris Mercer is a US Naval Officer who has been following the project since its inception.

"The sanctity and strength of all the victims, the first responders and their family members is really forged in the bow of this ship," he said.

"For the next 40 years that bow will lead this ship in projecting naval power all over the globe in our global fight against terrorism."
