Today, he assumed control of the 50,000-member One Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Pendleton, California.

In February 2004, during a panel discussion about the war in Iraq at the San Diego Convention Center, Mattis talked about fighting the insurgents:

"Actually, its a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. I like brawling.

"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis continued. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

I know, it would be much more humane if everybody sat holding hands in a circle and the insurgents talked about why they slap women around, but that's not how the Marines operate.
