Peggy Noonan calls for return to old school conservatism. |
|
Caught this buried in her column about how Republicans have destroyed the liberal media:
"Where does that leave us? I think it leaves us knowing that, more than ever, the Republican Party--the party ultimately helped by the end of the old monopoly and the reformation of news media--must be a good party, a decent one, and help our country." "That it regain a sense of its historic mission. That it stop seeming the friend of the wired and return to being the great friend of Main Street, for Main Street still, in its own way, exists. That it return to basic principles on spending, regulation and state authority. That it question a foreign policy that often seems at once dreamy and aggressive, and question, too, an overreaching on immigration policy that seems composed in equal parts of naiveté and cynicism. That its representatives admit that lunching with lobbyists is not the problem; failing to oppose the growth of government--so huge that no one, really no one, knows what is in its budget--is. That they reduce the size and power of government. That they help our country."
Regulation? Question our aggressive foreign policy? Actual cutting of spending?
:wtf:

3. Sounded more to me like the old "few bad apples" defense. |
|
As if the problem is the lobbyists leading the good republicans astray and causing them to deviate from their holy mission.

5. Rather than the truth, that the lobbyists are their corporate paymasters. |

Republicans do the bidding of lobbyists because that's what they are there for. They aren't there for any holy mission or righteous public service.
They are there to make rich people richer. Period.

4. The Neo-Cons Aren't CONSERVATIVES,... |
|
...they're right wingers.
Some actual conservatives may be starting to feel the hang over.

7. Noonan isn't one of them, though. |
|
Noonan is so uncritical of her Party and heroes in general...she put Reagan on his pedestal personally.

8. Did this "old school conservatism" ever actually exist? |
|
No, not really. It's never been anything more than an appealing myth.
Sure, individuals here and there have tried to live out that myth. But conservatism as a whole has always been a nasty, brutish ugly thing.
And it always will be. There is no part or aspect of its ideology that it won't throw overboard to satisfy its own lusts.

It's too fucking late! Ink's long dry on that contract you signed with the devil, and your actions since are etched in stone.

You know. The 'good old days' where they used to nail black people to trees, and set them on fire.

It's mostly boarded up these days. Walmart saw to that:)
Dads no longer have "office jobs" at the local bank.. they no longer knock off midday to schmooze at lunch with their work buddies, nor do they return home promptly at 5:30 and read the paper while Mommy finishes that roast beef dinner & apple pie. The little kids are not quietly doing their homework at the table after dinner..
Walmartization & sprawl have changed your Main Street .. These days most Moms & Dads are scrambling to fit in 2 or 3 jobs EACH..they are lucky to have time for lunch...
kids are shuttled to and from daycare and activities and desperately try to fit in homework in an ever-compressed-for-time day.
Dinner is likely to be drive-thru Mexican or delivered pizza or a frozen mystery-meal in the microwave..
Peggy lives in Dreamland Usa...most of us live in a real world (not a very pretty one at that)

15. All that dewy-eyed, breathless selling she did, did not bring |
|
a bright morning to America, but brought a dark night of fear and suffering instead. Time for Ms. Noonan to shut up and let truth be spoken. It will be truth that saves this nation, not PR.
