2. I'll be interested to see the responses to this. My guess is
it's not making any difference to them. I have relatives who live in VA. and I'd bet they would tell you they never heard that word, let alone knew it was a slur of any kind. Even I had to go to google and look it up because I never heard it either, and I was wondering what all the fuss was about in the MSM?

4. It's Getting A Lot of Local Play
The feeling seems to be it won't hurt his senatorial race but could mess up his run for President. Which is worse to be racist or stupid? He is one or both!

FOr a while No.VA wanted to break from the rest of the "Rednecks in the south"

local daily paper here). Also made the local news stations (I'm in Richmond).

Allen's remarks may hurt his hopes

<snip>

Allen, whose mother was born in northern Africa, told the Associated Press that he made the word up.

Robert Holsworth, political scientist at Virginia Commonwealth University, said the remarks call into question Allen's judgment and could hurt him in 2008, but he thinks Allen may have mitigated the damages by his quick apology. The fact that Allen turned to the young Webb volunteer's camera and made the remarks may indicate that Allen did not know how insulting his remarks were, Holsworth said.

This is not the first time Allen has been criticized for appearing to be racially insensitive.

Before he ran for governor in 1993, he kept a collection of Confederate flags in his cabin near Charlottesville. They were part of a flag collection, he said. While governor, he issued a Confederate History Month proclamation that did not mention slavery. This year The New Republic published a photo of Allen wearing a Confederate flag on his lapel in a high school yearbook picture. Allen said it was a symbol of youthful rebellion. Earlier this year, Allen was the lead Republican sponsor for a Senate apology over its failure to outlaw lynching decades earlier. He also made a civil-rights pilgrimage to Prince Edward County, where schools were closed to avoid integration.

<snip>

I'm calling bullshit on "he made the word up" part.

12. Are Virginians aware that Allen didn't set foot in
the state until he was a college sophomore in 1971? He's a native Californian and grew up in the Southern California (and, for a time, Chicago) suburbs. His accent's as fake as his cowboy persona. Is this info common knowledge in VA, or are people in the dark?

I use to live in Northern VA and I ALWAYS referred to it that way just for the reason you state - my test of when you get to the south is when they start calling it sweet tea - lol we poor yankees don't call it sweet tea I'm in the south now and I can tell you Northern VA isn't the South

7. Excuses aplenty
Check out the blog at www.novatownhall.com to see all the excuses that are being made for him -- pretty disgusting. They're calling it a "phony incident."

11. In Maryland here, the local area covers No Virginia
I usually watch the local NBC station, the newscaster sounded pretty disgusted with Allen when he reported it.
