Clinton greeted as a star for work fighting epidemic
(08-16) 04:00 PDT Toronto -- Nearly six years out of office, former President Bill Clinton found himself a revered elder statesman and a bit of an AIDS superstar as he held court here for two days at this 16th international conference on the global epidemic.
His chosen role as a former head of state is to devote much of the work of his William J. Clinton Foundation in New York to combatting the disease that devastated central and southern Africa during his presidency.
Clinton has been instrumental in lowering the cost of antiviral drugs to as little as $120 per patient a year in poor nations, and he wasn't hesitant to remind delegates here of his good work.
And although it was President Bush who boosted international AIDS spending to $15 billion over five years, Clinton brushed aside criticism on Monday that he did not do enough for AIDS while in office.
