Whoever wrote the Ransom note must have known the Ramseys
Mr. Ramsey,
Listen carefully! We are a group of individuals that represent a small foreign faction. We respect your bussiness but not the country that it serves. At this time we have your daughter in our posession. She is safe and unharmed and if you want her to see 1997, you must follow our instructions to the letter.
You will withdraw $118,000 from your account. $100,000 will be in $100 bills and the remaining $18,000 in $20 bills. Make sure that you bring an adequate size attache to the bank. When you get home you will put the money in a brown paper bag. I will call you between 8 and 10 a.m. tomorrow to instruct you on delivery. The delivery will be exhausting so I advise you to be rested. If we monitor you getting the money early, we might call you early to arrange an earlier delivery of the money and hence an earlier pickup of your daughter.
Any deviation of my instructions will result in the immediate execution of your daughter. You will also be denied her remains for proper burial. The two gentlemen watching over your daughter do not particularly like you so I advise you not to provoke them. Speaking to anyone about your situation such as police, F.B.I., etc., will result in your daughter being beheaded. If we catch you talking to a stray dog, she dies. If you alert bank authorities, she dies. If the money is in any way marked or tampered with, she dies. You will be scanned for electronic devices and if any are found, she dies. You can try to deceive us, but be warned we are familiar with law enforcement countermeasures and tactics. You stand a 99% chance of killing your daughter if you try to outsmart us. Follow our instructions and you stand a 100% chance of getting her back. You and your family are under constant scrutiny, as well as the authorities. Don't try to grow a brain, John. You are not the only fat cat around so don't think that killing will be difficult. Don't underestimate us, John. Use that good, southern common sense of yours. It's up to you now, John!
Victory! S.B.T.C

1. If memory serves,

the 118,000 amount is particularly significant. That specific amount had something to do with the father's business; I believe it was the exact amount of a bonus he had recently received. I could be wrong. Does anyone else remember this?

2. Why would a kidnapper wanting money kill the kid?
But only after raping her? Why would a child killer sit down and write a ransom note on the house stationary before or after killing the kid? And how did he expect to collect if the kid was left there dead?

6. Sounds to me like the killer was trying to cover his trail......
because she was already dead and he thought the note would throw the police off track.

8. You're making assumptions.
Who says the ransom note wasn't written ahead of time in a planned kidnapping gone sour?

(Damn! I promised myself I wouldn't add to any of these stupid threads!!) :grr:

19. Because it was proven the note was written on a pad of paper
that was already in the house.

And, yes... it's hard not to come into these threads. I love "who-done-it" books, so my interest is piqued.

That doesn't preclude the note being written before the murder.
One very possible scenario: kidnapper comes in, grabs child, brings her to basement and rapes and ties her up; then writes ransom note; but, oops, accidentally drops child head-first onto the concrete basement floor as he's trying to escape with her through the basement window (which evidence suggests was the escape route).

So, it's entirely possible.

4. Access Graphics
Access Graphics was a fairly large and successful business. His bonus was apparently known by quite a few people. If this guy lived near them in Georgia, he possibly could have been stalking them in Colorado. Time will tell.

11. It was the bonus
And it very well could have been reported in the press, and anyone who can read a financial statement probably could have found that figure. I'm not sure of the timeline, but those figures have to be revealed for top executives.

5. my mother, a graphologist, tells me Patsy admitted writing the note
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 10:12 AM by librechik
although I don't remember that. Her friends were among the handwriting experts who analyed the note, and they tell her Patsy wrote the note.

I am 98% convinced Patsy wrote the note in a panic while deciding what to do about the horrible discovery in the basement.

And I never believed the parents killed that child. It was a very odd case, and they acted squirrely as hell, but it never quite worked for me. Then a couple of years ago I read about an investigator who found credible evidence of a forced entry. I've believed in the parents' probable innocence ever since, but never thought they would be able to solve the case.

What an ugly ugly tragedy.

17. Why would she "panic" and write the note?
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 10:28 AM by Finnfan
Unless she knew the killer somehow. Maybe she hired him? Maybe she was having an affair with him?

The timing of this arrest and confession, coming just after Patsey's death, strikes me as suspicious.

29. I think she was afraid that her "beauty" activities with JonBenet
would look odd to the cops, and cause the parents to be suspected. So she wrote the note to try to blame the murder on an outsider. BTW, I think she was crazy if she did that, but she always seemed kinda nuts anyway.

9. The suspect in custody knew them from GA....
Both the Ramseys and the suspect lived in the same town in GA before the Ramseys relocated to Boulder. From the article I read, it seems the suspect had a lot of contact with them.

16. He may have hidden in the house before hand
One of the investigators said there were drawers slightly askew in one of the guest areas, so maybe he went through the house and came across that info. Or maybe he had been stalking the family, there was a business party a short time before the murder where he could have overheard this info.

23. The letter is so odd... it sounds like an adolescent wrote it...
which makes me think of the son, Burke. If not, it has to be someone who knew about the 118K because that amount is just too coincidental and I don't believe in coincidences. Did they investigate all the employees of Access Graphics?
