Update on Coulter's smash bestseller
From a GOPUSA email I for some reason keep getting blasted with...

"Ann Coulter's New Book

Just $4.99

Due to Unbelievable Interest,
Our Friends at GOPUSA Are Allowing Us to Extend
This Special Offer For the Next 24 Hours - Last Chance to Save Almost $23!

Ann Coulter's long-awaited new book has just been released - and it's already creating major media buzz."

That doesn't even cover the fucking paper they used to print this shit.

That's cheaper than firewood. Next they will be giving them away with each Happy Meal.

11. That last chance has been running since the day the book was published.
I get those same emails and they have dated back to the day the damn book was released. It wasn't worth $4.99 then and it isn't worth $1.99 now. Her book is on the best seller lists because "think tanks" of the neocon persuasion buy the things in bulk and they give them away, store them in warehouses or burn the damn things. I would be willing to bet she hasn't sold over 10,000 copies the old fashion way - a person goes to a bookstore or goes online and consciously opts to buy that sh*t.

4. Try this test
Do you know one person who has actually purchased this book? I asked a conservative co-worker, and, he stopped to think (a feat seldom seen) and said: "No. I don't know of anyone who has this book." No one else knew anyone with a copy, either.
These conservative books are bulk sold and bought up by friends of Bush. It's a way to make it appear America is reading this tripe.
We aren't.

12. The filter out through the distribution net
from publisher, to wholesaler to retailer and sit about a bit, then end up heading back to the publisher or are remaindered out for the $1.99 at the outlet mall stores. It could be very, very nice if Ann's book is a total flop. It then makes it very hard to get the next one even onto the shelves. At Retail, Shelf Space = $$$$$.

15. Here's proof
Ever seen a Coulter book in a used book store?

No one buys them, and no used book store would waste the space on em.

25. Interesting!
As a big fan of used book stores, I'm impressed by your insight. The only place I see these books are at the stores (marked down at Kroger). I DON'T see people carrying them on planes or mass transit.
But I do know of hapless employees who have attended "seminars" and have been given a free copy as a "gift".

20. I unfortunately do
I live in Spartanburg, SC and I have 2 family members and a guy who works at the YMCA who bought the book and loves Ann Coulter. I know it's scary, I try to talk with them and they are to far gone to listen.

I'm the enemy, it scares the hell out of me.

8. Actually, that probably just covers it.
The publisher will likely show a profit margin of 1%-3% on that book.

Oh, and we'll NEVER see it in paper. Crown would lose their shirt if they did.

The only lower price would be the per the pound recycle value.

26. Actually, sometimes they are
literally given away. At seminars. There's a whole speaking tour of rightwing trash talkers who make the circuit roping in gullible wannabees who think "I vote Republican. I will be rich!" (doesn't happen). And for their $300 fee, they get a free rightwing book of lies.
Such a deal.

19. On Franken's first show, he had Gordo Liddy on
He was trying to talk him into helping him break into Scaife's house so they could photograph all the Regnery books he had bought up to keep them on the bestseller list. Liddy thought that was hilarious (since HIS books actually sell).

22. Her "best sellers" have always been a result of large group purchases.
Not individual purchases like everyone else. There is some way to tell that from the sales figures.
