Not "The War in Iraq". It's "The Civil War in Iraq". Language Matters |
|
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 06:49 PM by David Zephyr
Since my first postings here at the DU in early 2001, I have urged people to use the term "corporate media" instead of mainstream media. I did not coin the phrase, but it is the truthful term and helps dispel the lie that there is actually a "liberal" or people's media.
Now I have another one and I hope you all will help turn the tide with a turn of a phrase.
THERE IS NOT WAR IN IRAQ. THERE IS A CIVIL WAR IN IRAQ. This should be in our everyday language.
As we all know, Rove's White House has fogged the difference between the "war on terror" and the "war in Iraq". While, I am not a believer in even the "war on terror", most Americans are. It is important to label the mess in Iraq just as it is. It is a civil war.
Bush likes to call himself the "War President", but if we cherish truth then he can only be the "CIVIL WAR PRESIDENT".
I have determined that I will never again post with the misleading and manipulative phrase "the War in Iraq" but with the accurate term, "Bush's Civil War in Iraq".
He caused it and I believe in giving credit to credit is due.
Remember, you can frame the issue, if you name the issue.
It's the Civil War in Iraq.
Will you help?

it's a sad fact that we can only counter propaganda with equally clear, simple framing.
I'm with you

Wouldn't it be swell if our Democrats in Congress began saying it, too?

though I won't hold my breath
that is one thing I love about Dean, though... he's great at summing things up in easily-digestible pieces, that even the most brain-dead repube can grasp
which I guess is why they smeared him

3. It is a US war against Iraq. Immoral, illegal, insane war. We can't |
|
pretend the US is not at war against Iraq, or pretend that it was not instigated without US intervention.
