Crazy idea, bear with me: why not donate to SCHLESINGER? |
|
In a front page article here yesterday, Skinner suggested that Ned Lamont come out swinging against Arthur Schlesginer on the issues, hoping to drive the conservative Republican voters into his camp instead of Lieberman's.
I apologize if this appears to be a violation of the DU rules at first, but please bear with me and read all the way through before you make a judgment or flame me.
What if we start donating money to Schlesinger?
The GOP has abandoned him. The money is drying up. So maybe it's time for us to take a page out of Rick Santorum's playbook. Santorum is practically singlehandedly financing and backing a Green candidate to take support away from Bob Casey in Pennsylvania. So, why don't WE do some work to help split the REPUBLICAN vote in Connecticut? Set the old-time Republican (Schlesinger) against the new-time Republican (Lieberman).
Give Schlesinger money to get his message out there. Let him emphasize that he's the only real conservative in the race. That will help peel off some of Lieberman's support.
Let's get an independent group out there to start running ads for Schlesinger a-la the Swift Boaters. Just picture it now: classic "negative campaign" music and a really ugly photo of Joe. The voiceover starts. "Joe Lieberman is FOR abortion. He SUPPORTS gay rights. He's even promised that if we elect him to the Senate, he's going to caucus with the Democrats, and might be the deciding vote in who gets control of the Senate. Wouldn't we be better off with a REAL Republican in the seat? Call Arthur Schlesinger and thank him for standing up for real Republican values." That sort of thing.
I know the conservative population in Connecticut must be more than the 6% Schles is running at now. If we draw the distinctions between him and Lieberman, maybe we can effectively split their vote.
Crazy idea, but then six months ago we were called crazy for thinking that Lamont might win the primary.

4. If you have that kind of disposable income, go right ahead. |

When I throw my little tiny bit of money around, it will go to Democratic candidates. There are enough of them around the country in some very tight races.

Media-enabled echo chamber to independents and disenchanted Dems, angry at the REPUG support for Lieberman, that DEMS are doing the SAME thing! Why, they will ask, are DEMS supporting this REPUBLICAN candidate? So, then the remaining small numbers of undecideds decide there really ISN'T any difference and just stay home on election day?......?
Yeah. Schles is going nowhere, so let's use him to SHOOT OURSELVES in the foot. Heavens to Betsy. Someone will probably do it, too. Can't we JUST THINK through consequences, for once?

6. Better to support the Green |

and let him do it. If the Green did get on the ballot, they could offset the notion that Lamont is the far left AND do the dirty work of pointing out Schlesinger's Republican "values". The benefit would be they would get a larger platform to push leftist issues into the debate.
