How much does politics influence where you choose to live?
I used to think that hardly anyone paid attention to whose district they were moving into. After all, a lot of people don't seem to know who their elected officials are in the first place.

When I moved to Madison 6 years ago I did not know it was such a great liberal city, believe it or not. But now that I live here I don't want to leave, and a good part of it is because I actually like my elected officials, and it doesn't seem like its easy to find a place like that in this political climate. If I were offered a great job in a red city/red state, I don't think I would take it.

1. Actually, none.
I am in a red state, in a red county and my opinions are just as important as anyone else's.

Plus, I think we have a good shot at getting Allen out of the Senate.

12. Every state has at least one like him
We have Sensenbrenner in my neighboring district. Maybe we can send the two of them on a long trip together, somewhere they'd be the only two white males...

...but the natural beauty of this place makes up for all kinds of political shortcomings. Besides our Republicans are FUNNY - e.g., Ted Stevens. You just can't get much more amusing than that. And Don Young with all the dead animal heads on his office wall??

9. I have gotten to feeling so suspicious & hateful toward others
I am moving in early spring to a remote location in New England to GET AWAY from people. I am checking population change maps and focusing on counties where the population has been decreasing or is already at low density. I am looking at the kinds of places that most other people DON'T want. I feel that major upheaval is coming and do NOT want to be in an urban or suburban environment.

Red state, red district, red county, etc. However, both my kids and all my grandchildren live here too. And there are people I can carry on an intelligent conversation with. Guess I'll just have to be happy with what I've got.

Samm Simpson for Congress (although the City of Clearwater was gerrymandered out of the District, as was St. Pete). I moved to Pinellas to get away from the Wisconsin weather, never thought about politics, just wanted never to see a minus sign in front of the temperature again.

30. Wrong decision
I would take subzero weather before the uneducated Jesus ranting wingnut cretins. I have lived all over the country and have never had such contempt for people. One of the reasons is there is no industry there. Everyone works in the service sector. It requires no education. The NE snow birds were OK....but I'm not much into boats

It's home. We have a Republican Representative (for now) and a Democratic Governor. The City Council is an absolute joke, no matter which party they purport to be (no "partisan" parties on city council), we are right across the Mississippi River from Illinois, and basically, I like it here. Iowa First District, City of Davenport. Yeah!

21. Just moved from Wisconsin to Indiana
and politics had little to do with it. Ensuring we got a $million plus contract was the motivator.

I haven't paid enough attention to Indiana politics, I assume I moved from purple to redder-purple. I just got here 6 weeks ago.

By the way, the Indiana BMV blows. I spent over three hours transferring registration, getting a license, and titling the cars today. What a great way to spend a beautiful Saturday morning.

24. None
My parents moved me and my brothers here when I was 5. After graduating high school I lived in a few other cities within the DFW area. I lost my job and moved home for awhile, so here I was. I got a new job and when I moved out, I just moved to a northern part of this city.

I like it here and I'll continue to vote for change.

26. FWIW, I hated living in a red state (AZ) and moved back to IL
partly because I couldn't stand the majority of the people around me. Total kooks. I've lived in IL for all but the 5 miserable years I lived in the Phoenix area. Red state, red congressional district, red county, red fundies everywhere, red retirees, dark red state legislature. :puke: I absolutely hated it there, and love being back in IL. AZ never felt like home to me.

For 2 reasons. Politics and the weather. Too much snow and too many rednecks. So, we'll stay put on the west side of the Cascades.

publicly and behind the scenes to educate people. I'm less successful than I'd like but now and
then see a glimmer of hope. We just happen to like the natural ambiance (not to mention the low
cost of living) here. :-)

31. I'll NEVER live in a red area again. Ever.
Especially in a small town. I have absolutely nothing in common with my neighbors with their fundamentalist/Mormon/right-wing mentality. And I have no desire to spend any more of my precious few years left on earth trying to educate anyone. I am polite, but I have to keep my distance from these people as their only interest in me seems to be religious conversion. ugh. Only a good job keeps us here now. I'd love to move to Portland.

it's a little too cool and clammy much of the year for me. I've lived in large cities and never want to again - it's 8 miles to the nearest traffic light here and that's almost too close for me. :D

39. Sort of political, since I'm gay it has to be big cities
I really can't see myself living in a city with less than 300,000 people in it. It takes a population about that to have a coherent, active, and open gay community, politically and socially. There also is safety in numbers. Straight people in large cities are generally more tolerant (or cowed into shutting up about it), as is the police depts. There are exceptions to that rule. Not talking about resorts like Key West or Provincetown of course, but the little gay bar in 30,000 people St. Joseph Mo doesn't reaslly cut it.

40. You're always welcome in Madison WI
where gays are accepted in the community and not segregated into certain neighborhoods or bars. Lots of gay couples raising children here. We are proud to have elected the first openly gay Congresswoman, Tammy Baldwin.

Population: 208,000

Probably 8,000 bigots or less.
