Katie Couric Promo on CBS
Edited on Sat Aug-19-06 05:22 PM by Botany
"I think we need perspective on what the news means to you.
And that is what I am going to try to do."

Thank you Katie, thank you! All this time I haven't been able to get the news explained
to me by you has so hurt my understanding of the world.

How about you hire good reporters, producers, camera persons, and writers and try
to report the news by covering the FACTS and interviewing different people involved
in the story and letting me make up my own mind?

2. Did she actually say "prospective" rather than...
..."perspective," or was it just a typo? Wouldn't surprise me if she wasn't unfamiliar with the difference between the words.

5. Wouldn't surprise me if CBS has a Major Flopola on its hands with this
Edited on Sat Aug-19-06 05:28 PM by SpiralHawk
They lost me when they wouldn't stand behind Rather and his story about how George AWOL Bush was a Deserter from TANG. Talk about gutless corporate weenies. They did no digging. Showed no integrity. Caved to the radical right-wing repulcions, and Assumed the Position.

I was a lifelong CBS News watcher. But they have gone -- since then -- so deeply into the corporate sell-out bucket that they have lost credibility with many others. I watch no nightly news anymore. I mistrust all of them -- CBS included.

Couric has ZIPPO in the way of gravitas. She is bright, perky, and EMPTY. CBS knows it, too. They think bright and perky will hold their ratings. They have totally disowned the notion of doing hard, deep, basic, and accurate reporting.

The only way CBS and the other Corporate Media Clones will ever re-gain credibility is to actually Tell the Truth -- without malice or favoritism. But they have all abandoned that.

With the Couric move, CBS has joined Faux news in the propgaganda bucket of history. No credibility. No gravitas. no service to the public.

6. good point
the story on bush being AWOL is true ..... but through the use
of planted papers and a full on spin job the story became
Dan Rather and his "evil deeds" and not the fact that the commandeer in
chief failed to follow the chain of command when he was in the service.

"I called the base commandeer to let him know what i was doing." GWB

a LT calling a Commanding officer of a base and just picking up and moving
his duty station ( where he never showed up )? Please

I am scared that this November after they steal another election Katie will
explain to us, "the country felt safer w/ republicans in this time of war."

I hope the mistake is not a long one.

I will never watch "Navy SEALS rock!" read my news to me.

4. I'm not her fan but,
...when she said, "what the news means to you" she could have meant how legislation will affect the average person, which is something reporters should explain.

8. Frankly, her statement should NOT be news.
That's just stupid. As long as I was in the business, for 25 years, that was the main thrust for EVERYBODY in radio and in TV, to try to present not just the news but how the news affects YOU the listener/viewer. Even Dan Rather talked about that when he'd appear at industry conferences and other gatherings, or in interviews. The question is - is this just dawning on Katie? Or is it just more sloganeering from the network PR department? She should be well-versed in this pursuit anyway, from all her years on the "Today" show. A widely-held and commonly-agreed-to view of news presentation and information brokering.

7. That statement makes absolutely NO SENSE...
"I think we need perspective on what the news means to you.
And that is what I am going to try to do."

What is she going to "try" to do? Need perspective?

That phoney girl better get a professional makeup artist, some friggin pantyhose, and diction lessons so she can start pronouncing words that end with "ing" properly. She says "I'm talkeen...thinkeen...workeen." like a valley girl or something. DRIVES ME CRAZY.

12. I Don't Think She'll Make It The First Six Months
If they were smart they'd bring Dan back, and I hear they are doing some kind of special for Dan. This seems strange to me, since Dan is already working somewhere else. Then you have Brian Williams & Charlie Gibson who she will be competing with, and she just can't do that - no way!

14. I think it makes sense
Instead of a bunch of professors arguing about the wiretapping decision if they had someone explaining why the decison is important to individuals that would be an improvement.

16. "RNC Wiretappers ROCK!!!"
That's the kind of "perspective" for the average viewer we'll be getting from Couric.

"Gimme a G!!! Gimme an O!!! Gimme a P!!!"

Frickin' gooper cheerleader. Fuck CBS.

Why would CBS choose her to replace Dan Rather?

18. now, what hell....
....is this corporate media whore going to tell us about the 'news' that isn't written on her corporate media script?....

....if CBS would just let us read their propaganda tele-prompter directly, they could save a lot of money that could be better spent on stealing elections by corporate candidates....

19. I saw that and laughed rather cynically.
You can be sure in the interviews and all the business lunches she had with network executives that it was pretty much worked out about how the news would be delivered by her and I don't think there was a carte blanche clause in the contract she eventually signed. She's just another rubber stamp for the fake news pretending to be real news.

21. Perspective IS needed...
Edited on Sat Aug-19-06 11:30 PM by Impashund Ubique
We do need people in the news who can explain to the average public how issues such as unconstitutional practices by the President (or is it monarch, now?) or the selection of Alito as SC Justice affect them. Not opinions, just facts about ways in which these issues matter to the folks out there who don't have the time or interest to dig through web searches.

News these days is either worthless (anything on Fox) or it is aimed at well-informed people (Countdown for example).

But is Katie Couric the person to bring that kind of lucid, objective perspective that we need more than ever before? Umm.. Nevermind. I don't know - I'm willing to give her a chance, but I'm not sure she has what it takes.

The truth does stand though - there are a lot of people out there who would get engaged in the political and news world once again if they could find a voice that resonates with them. Someone who plainly & forcefully talks about what's going on without the stoicism that envelopes the likes of Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams. In that way, I think she brings something of value to CBS - a personable anchor. For success, however, she'll have to prove that she's both personable and a heavyweight. Tough task.

She mostly annoyed me on the Today Show though. *shrugs*
