Strangely, I think he still thinks of himself as a Democrat, albeit a very strange kind of one. He almost snapped back briefly when Zell Miller challenged him to a duel, but I guess he's gotten over that.

I read him all the time and his ideas then were very liberal. I don't know who the person is that is occupying Chris Matthew's body these days. Some say he was snubbed by the Clinton administration, whom he felt should have offered him a job. It does seem that from that time he started getting even with Clinton when the Monica scandal broke out. Now I guess he's so deep in neo-con shit he can't pull himself out.

Matthews, a Philadelphia native and Roman Catholic, graduated from La Salle College High School and The College of the Holy Cross, and did graduate work in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then served in the Peace Corps in Swaziland as a trade development advisor.
Matthews has worked for four Democratic politicians. He was a presidential speechwriter for four years during the administration of Jimmy Carter. He served as a top aide to long-time Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O'Neill for six years. He worked in the U.S. Senate for five years on the staffs of Senators Frank Moss and Edmund Muskie before running for U. S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. In December 2005, Matthews' brother Jim announced that he was a Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania.
