Senate GOP wants Reid staffer fired
Senate GOP wants Reid staffer fired
RAW STORY

"Senate GOP leaders are eyeing a variety of options for responding to an ethics dossier on 33 chamber Republicans that was prepared by Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) “war room,” ranging from a request that the Ethics Committee look into whether the memo constitutes taxpayer-funded electioneering to demanding that Reid shutter his communications center, or calling for the dismissal of Reid’s Staff Director Jim Manley and other aides who were involved in putting together the memo," GOP sources told ROLL CALL Friday afternoon. Excerpts follow -- full paid-restricted story here.

The discussions are the latest salvo in a growing message war between Reid and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN), who has launched his own “peace room” to respond to Democrats’ message center.

“Using government funds for campaign activities is wrong, plain and simple — in fact, in some cases, you can go to jail — and given that Reid’s staff appears to be acting without his knowledge, and breaking the rules, an apology note is a small first step, but if he really means what he says, he ought to shut down the war room” and dismiss the aides who are responsible, a GOP aide familiar with the discussions said.

:nopity:

9. In all fairness, it's not hacking if you don't secure it to begin with.
My understanding is that the Dem files were on an unsecured network share. Anyone can browse them by using "Network Neighborhood/My Network Places."

16. Not according to the Patriot Act...
...if the intrustion was undesired, it's considered a violation. Yes, it's unenforcable, and completely hypocritical coming from the We-Spy-On-You Administration, but that's the way its written.

23. Sounds good, but not true.
If my neighbor doesn't secure his wifi and I use it to scan his computer, I have committed a crime.
If my neighbor leaves his keys in the car, my neighbor can be accused of being stupid, but that didn't give me the right to take it for a drive.

26. Yeah, but we're talking about a publicly-owned Senate computer.

That information, unless it's classified, is in the public domain.

People shouldn't be leaving strategy documents on them. They need to save that for their campaign-funded laptops.

Reid shouldn't have apologized in the first place.

10. That's why we need to find a graceful way to move him out
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 04:49 PM by depakid
He's been a disaster- and it shows no sign of abating.... I hate to say this, but I was hoping that his health problems would convince him (and the Dems) that he needed to step down.

Put Durbin in his place. Or at least someone FROM A STATE WITH A FEW MORE ELCTORAL VOTES THAT SOUTH DAKOTA OR NEVADA for crissakes.

6. My oh my, the GOP is getting awfully demanding
I remember they didn't give two hoots about Tom Daschle, but it seems like every other day they're pissed off at Reid over something. I wonder why that is?

12. Ok, walk me through this, if you don't mind.
Reid's staff (unbeknown to him) compiled a dossier on 33 Republican senators regarding what? Their ethics violations? How is this construed to be an "election" related thing? It's been a long day, here in the salt mines, can you help me out? TIA...

15. Seems like research to come up with reform legislation to me
How you gonna write rules to fix things if you don't have an accurate picture of what's broke in the first place?

17. I left out the BEST Part...
Manley called the Republican discussions “ridiculous.” A senior Democratic aide backed Manley, vowing, “The war room will never close. Manley will never be fired.”

20. Yes, pointing out the corruption in government is not government business
Showing Jack Abramoff around, introducing him, making sure his legislation gets through....THAT's a legitimate use of taxpayer dollars.
